States steam lighthouse tender Myrtle,
went ashore on Brown's Island shoal,
three-quarters of a mile southeast of Piy-
mouth Light, at 6:30 p. m. Saturday. Capt.
Holmes and the Gurnet life-saving crew
went her assistance, and at 12:3 a. m. yos.
terday got her out of a position that might
have been dangerous had she remained an
hour longer. The Myrtle is now anchored
safely in the harbor, having sustained no
damage.
Baco’s Young Bank Defaulter.
Saco, Me., Dec. 18. ~The rumor current
here Baturday that Frank M. McoNeally, the
clerk in the Baco and Biddeford savings
institution, who svsconded last August
with about 825000 in cash and securities,
is sick and penitent, and Bins made a prop-
osition to the bank to réttirn the bonds, if
thereby he can escape prosecution, is con-
firmed. Interviews have been bad with
officers of the dunk, but none of them wih
| divulge a single thing, though they precti-
| cally admit that there is something in the
wind. It has been known here for several
weoks that McNeally was in England, and
there are good reasons for belleving that
the bank has received, directly or Indi-
rectly, communications fron him, and that
| he is endoavoridg to negotiate for the re
turn of the atolen securities. It is also
lrarned from good autliority that the de
faulter is now en route for Halifax from
Liverpool and will arrive in a few days.

The Gang Makes Another Haul
Bosrox, Dec. 10.-The gang of burglars
mado another hail Saturday night A visit
was paid to Newton, and the residence of
John C. Farlow of the Chicago, Burlington
and Quincy railroad was entered. An en-
trance was effected through the dining
room window, and one of the gang went
into Mr. Farlow's room, secured a bunch
of keys, and with them opened a safe in the
dining ros. The burglars secured over
2,000 worth of jewelry, including » cluster
diamond pin valued ut $1,200. Mrs. Farlow
awoke and discoversd the burglars, but
before the inmates of the honse were
awakened the burglars male good their os-
cape. Loss than two years ago Mr. Far
low's house was visited by burglars, who
succeeded In getting away with $5,000 of
i booty.
Not a Golden Field for Baseball Men.
Bax Francisco. Dec. 17. The expectations
of soma of the baseball players who came
from the east to make mousy during the
winter season have not been realized, and

high-priced men, and has only two games

Ravages of Diphtheria.
ArLpaxy, Dec, 19. -Diphtherias has been
doing deadly work in Behohario and vicinity
recently, there having been twenty-eight
cases. In one family four deaths doctirred.
Most of the fatal cases were among young
children, but threo persons between the
ages of 10 and 20 years have fallen victims
| to the disease. A careful inquiry into the
| cause of the diseaso falls to elicit satisfac
' tory responses. Its ravages have been in
the lowlands and on the lowlands, in the
lic schools and Bunday schools have been
closed for some time. It is now thought
that the danger 1s past and the disease
abating.
