The condition of the road thro’ town, as far as to the station, is a shamefal one, and the matter shonld he looked after, there is law enough to bring about an improvement in the neglected », . ~=(ur Presbyterian brethren, we un- derstand, have abandoned building on the Fiiesher lot, on account of certain dif- feronces, and have chosen a far more leasant site—the Welsh (now Mingle) ot, on west side of street. This we take to be one of the best locations to be had, and will no doubt please all. About one half or the foundation had been complet- od on the Fliesher lot. ~The Centre Hall band made its first appearance on our streets, on Batur- day evening last, since its disbandment some three years ago. ‘Lhe band played well, and will no doubt, come up to its former reputation, which placed it among the in our county. Quite a number of the old members are in it, with some excellent new material. Dr. Jacobs is the leader, which means that the band is to be a success, ~=A young man in the State of In- diana heard some person walking through the house the other night. He at once concluded that burglars were inside, and seizing his revolver he fired at the sap- posed intruder. A moment later the dreadful fact was disclosed that he had killed his mother. The fellow who sleeps with a revolver under his pillow sud dreams about burglars, is always in danger of shooting some member of his own household, MILLS. SATURDAY AT SPRING CROWD, AND AN INTERESTING PROGRAM, The Knights of the Golden Eagle of Spring Mills had their day on last Sat- urday; a large crowd being present from all parts of the valley. The day was clear and pleasant and many took advan- tage of it for a day in the woods and at tend the festival which offered so many attractions. The principal features of the afternoon were the shooting by Mr. 8, K.Bober, the marksman, of whom | Centre county can truly feel proud, and the game of base ball between Aarons burg and Spring Mills teams. GAME OF BALL. A LARGE The game of ball was Played in the meadow near the station and was an in- teresting one. Aaronsburg ‘boys came prepared to do up Spring Mills, havieg secured Mr, Jesse Shipman of Shamokin, an amateur curve pitcher of some Jor: utation, to occupy the box. Spring Mills team was strengthened by Messrs. Orris McCormick, Will Runkle and Isaac Harpster, of Centre Hall=Runkle pitch- ing and Harpster behind the bat, Aaronsburg took the lead up to the end of the seventh inning when the score stood 8 to 8 and the game was stopped on account of an accident to one of the players. As an exhibition of “kicking” this game was the best example of any- thing ever seen in the valley, and at times it was impossible to fell who was ampire., Below is the score, made by our friend, Sober, on Blue Rock pigeons. All the persons robbed recently, io Sugar valley, while on their way to look Haven, have beensbown a crowd of persons, among whom was Shafer the noonsed murderer of the Culveys, and all without exception, as we are informed, have identified Shafer asthe man who stopped them on the highway. Miss Reece, who was threatened on the pub- lio road, and ran away, has also fled Shafer as the man, There seems to be no doubt that he is the murderer of Mr. and Mrs. Calvey, Bhafer isa young man of about 21 years, and a very bad character. We are told he was in the west some time ago where his bad deeds made itsafer for him to leave than to remain, THE REARING There was a hearing in Lock Haven on Tuesday afternoon in the case of James Kline and Luther Shaffer, on the charge of robbery, and they were bound over for court. One of the watches found on Luther Shaffer is identified as belonging to an individual who was robbed, Essec Kline and “Bone” John- son have not yet been given a hearing.
