canse he was one too and also went to
the opposite element and sought support
leaving the impression he was an ant-

bottle of whisky into the township. If
the intelligent citizens of that township
do not rebuke such an insult we mistake
their temper. We know it as a positive
fact that yp candidate has played a sim-

Amos Gift residing four miles west of
Middleburg last week found a land tur
tle on his farm that his father’s name,
Jacob Gift (now deceased) inscribed on
it with the year 1833. The turtie has re-
mained the the farm ever since this ine
scription was put on it, and it is abont 10
years since Mr. Gift has seen it last. This
makes the creature 53 years old to a cer-
tainty, to say nothing of its age before
Mr. Gift’s father found it.— Post.

The plan may work in England, where men
are presumably frank and willing to admit

never do in this country. The chances of

The Progress Made in Base Ball,
The game of bass ball Is now wonderfully
perfect, and I never tire of looking at it, or
thinking of the extraordinary strides it has
taken in fifteen or twenty years Why,
when the old Empires and Unions used to
play it was considered a wonderful per.
formance for a man to catch a ball on the
bound I remember what astonishment it
created at the base ball convention in 1560
when somebody proposed to abolish the first
bound and make nothing but fly catches
count out in the fleld. Why, most of us
rose up and protested against any such in-
novation as calculated to injure the game;
and 1 was one of the most earnest opposers
of the new scheme It went through,
though. Now we have nothing but dy
catches, and the game of 1856 is entirely
different from the game of 1800. —H. Clay
