A Matter in Which the Public Should
Have a Deal of Interest,
To the readers of this paper:
Why does the government spend so
much money and risk so many lives in
trying to capture the counterfeiter ?
“Suppose he does counterfeit govern-
ment bonds and notes, surely the gov-
ernment 18 rich enough to stand any loss
his act may confer!”
But the individual ocitizen could ill
afford to be put to continual financial
loss if such desperadoes were let go un-
whipped of justice,
It is only the valuable thing that is
counterfeited; it is only iu the light of
can beknown. Noone in these days
would counterfeit a Confederate bond
or note.
People who commit fraud always do
it by simulating the highest virtue; by
preying on
with which to give respectability to
vice.
Let us explain: Seven or eight years
ago, 50 we have been informed many
times in public prints, a New York
state gentlemsn was pronounced, as
many millions have been pronounced
before, incurably sick of an extreme
disorder. By suggestions which he be-
heved were providential, he was led to
the use of a preparction which had been
few physicians in New York city and
result was that he was cured, he whom
ability said was incurable. Having se
to devote a portion of hs accumulated
wealth to the manufacture and sale of
this remedy for the benefit of the many
who suffer as he saffered, 1A apparent
hopelessness. In less than three years,

All authorities, I believe, are agreed
in giving the preference to chlorine,
which may be evolved by mixing in a
bottle two tablespoonfuls of common
salt, two tablespoonfuis of red lead and
half a wineglassful of strong oll of vit-
riol in a quart of water. The bottle
should be kept cool, tightly stopped and
in a dark place; a little of this fluid
exposed in a saucer, sprinkled onthe
floor, or soaked in’ sheets of old linen
and hung about the réoms, rapidly des-

Satistactory Evidence.
J. W. Graham, Wholesale Druggist,
Austin, Tex., writes,—]I have been han-
{dling DE. WM, HALL'S BALSAM FOR
THE LUNGS for the past year, and have
turing devices. Probably there never
was a remedy that hes won such a meri-
torious name, such extraordinary sales
and has accomplished so much good for
the race,
Unprincipled Parties w/o flouriat
only upon the ruins of others, saw in
this reputation and sale an opportunity
to reap a goiden harvest, (not legiti
mately, not honorably) for which par-
pose they have made imitations aad
substitutions of it in every section of
the country, and many druggists, who
can make a larger profit on these imi-
tation goods, ={lcn compromise their
honor by forcing a sale upon the un-
posted customer,
Yes, undoubtedly the manufaclur
could well afford to such in-
stances of fraud so far as the effect upon
themselves is concerned, for their rewe-
dies have a constant and unremitling
gale, but they feel it to be thcir duty to
warn the public against such imitations
and substitations, non-secret and other-
wise. The individual who buys them
and the public who countenances their
sale alonesnffer in mind, body and es-
tate therefor.
The authrs of some
lent practices have been pros
gent to prison for their crimes, but there
is another class who eclaun to know the
formula of this remedy and one Sanday
school journal, we are told, has prosti-
tuted its high and holy calling so far ss
to advertise that for twenty-five cents it
will send all new subseribers a tran-
script of the Warner's formula! This
rs
ignore
frandua-
weuted and
of these
derfully kaleidoscopic affair, for there
is hardly a month passes when some
paper is not issued which pretends to
give the only correct formula !
The manufacturers inform us that
public should know what the true form-
nls of Warner's safe cure is, (none that
have been published are aoything like
it,) but even if every man, woman and
miliar with this formula as with their
A B C's they could not compound the
is a secret. It is impossible to obtain
the results that are wrought by this
remedy if one does not have the perfect
skill acquired only by years of practice
for compounding and ssmmilating the
gimple elements which enter into ils
composition,
The learned Dr, Foster, tho honored
head of Clifton Springs samtarium, once
said that having roughly analyzed this
remedy he recognized that the elements
that compose it were simple but he at-
tributed the secret of its power to the
method of its compounding, and this
method no one knows except the manu-
facturers and no one ean acquire it,
Our advice to our readers, therefore,
cannot be too strongly emphasized, As
you would prefer viriue to vice, gold to
dross, physical happiness to physical
misery, shun the imitator and refuse
thereby to lend your aid fioancially to
nother’s tation and honesty, a sale
for wares goodswhich on their merits
are fit only to be rejected as the veriest
refuse, You can neither afford to pa-
tronize such people nor cau you afford
to take their injurious compounds into
your system. When you call
Warner's Safe Cure see that the wrap-
per is black with whate letters and that
the wrapper and label bear an imprint
of an won safe, the trade mark, and
that a safe 18 blown wn the back of the
bottle and that a perfect 1 ¢ pronussory
note stamp is over the cork. You can’t
be imposed on if you observe these
cautions,
Wo have the highest respect for ihe
remedy we have mentioned and the
highest regard for the manufacturers,
and we cannot too highly commend
their dignified and considerate tone in
relation to those who would traduce
their fair name and ruin the best inter-
est of the public in such matters.

Among the creatures which attracted
Prof. Haeckel’s attention during a re.
cent tour in Ceylon was the great black
scorpion—nearly a foot long--which he
found to exist in such numbers that he
collected half a dozen specimens in the
course of an hour. Snakes were also
noticed in great abundance. Slender
green snakes hung from almost every
bough, and at night the great rat-snake
hunted rats and mice over the roofs of
the huts. Although these rat-snakes
are harmless, Prof. Haeckel considers it
by no means a pleasant surprise when
one of them, five feet long, suddenly
drops through a hole in the roof into
guts room, perhaps alighting on the
bed,
