THE STATE WANTS ITS DUE.
There is a law taxing money at inter-
est in Pennsylvania. Heretofore it has
been evaded, except by the few honest
people who don't lie to the assessor.
The last legislature passed a bill to se-

which it is expected will amount to three
millions of dollars a This law
provides that the commissioners of each
county shall appoint some persons to

nspectors could be found and the car-
asses of the diseased animals were
traced to the market houses. This is
not of quite as much interest to the gen-
eral public as the previous revelations
about the cattle, for the reason that
more beeves than sheep are slaughtered
in the west for transportation by re-
frigerator car. But it still has an inter-
est everywhere as showing how utterly
inefficient our methods of inspection
sre and what dangers our people incur
by reason of this condition of affairs.
Chicago is probably in a worse condition
than most cities, east or west ; but there
can be no question that any town, large
or small, is suffering from the lack of an
honest anfl rigid system of inspection

Tug one hundredth anniversary of
the settlement of Clearfield county was
celebrated at Luthersburg on the 30th
ult. Five thousand persons participated
in the exercises, and addresses were
made by Hon, John Patton, of Curwens-
ville; P. 8. Weber, of DuBois, and D. C.
Gillespie, of Big Run. Hon. Jobn Pat-
ton has resided in the county for fifty
years, and remembers every judge who
has served and sheriff elected in the
county during that time,
Clearfield county has furnished one
governor, two senators and one congrass-

county have been elected to the supreme
bench.
The centennial celebration was held to
commemmorate the coming of the first
settler, James Woodside, who located in
the county just one hundred years ago
on thie day of the anniversary, and who
lies baried at Luthersburg. Mr. Orier
Bell, now aged cighty-seven years, was
the first white child born in the county.

TRUNK LINE CONBOLIDATIONE,
Vanderbilt Said to Have About Absorbed
the South Pennsylvania,
Philadelphia, July 28 It is generally
understood that Vanderbilt has so fortis
fied himself that the South Pennsylvania
and Beech Creek railroads are entirely
at his disposal. Members of the build-
ing syndicates who are resisting the
present negotiations are forced to admit
the fact, and it would occasion no sur-
prise if the two properties had passed
into the possession of the Pennsylvania
railroad company by September. Van-
derbilt is said to have secured nearly $9,
000,000 the $15,000,000 of subscrip-
tions to the South Pennsylania road.
Bedford, Pa., July 28.-—The people in
the southern tier of counties in this
state express much indignation over the
proposed absorption of Penn-
of
3
sylvania railroad by the Pennsylvania
company. The platform adopted by the
Democratic county convention, which
met here to-day, is fierce in its denuncia-
tion of the encroachments of corporas
tions, and one of its resolutions reads as
follows :
“We emphatically protest against the
proposed sale and consdslidation of par-
allel and competing railroad lines as |
