THE TAILORS DID NOT LIKE IT,
In1767 Footehad pr

announced the revival of this piece for
his benefit. As the title implies, i
a satire upon the sartorial oral and
upon the bills being issued an indig-
nation meeting was convened among the
knights of the needle, who vowad to op-
pose the performance by might and
main. Menscing leifers wore gent to
Dowton telling him that 17,000 tailors
would saitend fo hiss the piecs, and one
who signed himself ** Death” added that
10,000 more could be found if necessary.
These threats were langhed at by the
actors ; but when night came it was dis.
covered that the eraft were in earnest
and that, with few exceptions, they had
contrived to secure every seal in the
house, while a mob without still squeezed.

pair o f shears at him. Not a word would
the ri oters listen to, nor would they ao-

chang ing the piece. Within howled and

with a prolonged sniff, bwallowing the

In distributing some prizes to the
young women of a female college in
London recently, the Duke of Cumber-
land facetionsly illustrated tho impor-
tance of cookery. He traced the decad-
ence preceptible in Turner's late pictures
up to the period when his digestion be-
cameo impaired. He took to sherry, and
that neither improved his health or art;
brandy drinking followed sherry tipp-
ling, with the result that some of his
pictures in the National Gallery look
more like salads than anything else.
The moral waa that if Tarner had an
officiont cook at the aritical period when
his digestion failed, his works would
have béen greater than they are,
