calling for heavier taxes year by year.
Much to his astonishment, a few days
ago he received a letter offering £11,000
for the property. This was a nice little
sum for pin money, but with an eye to
business he declined the proposition,
stating that he hoped to make a country
residence of the place gome time. The
would-be purchaser wrote back and
doubled his first offer. The next day Mr.
Walk received a telegram offering #80,-
000 for the property. Finally, on in.
quiry, he learned that his five acres
were in the heart of Kansas City, and
would sell for almost any price he would

SECRET OF THE JUMPING BAN,
The mystery of the jumping beans of
Mexico was solved several years ago here
on the Comstock. The explanation is
simple enough ; there is in each bean a
worm whose instinet it is to so skip as to
put the bean in motion. The insect
gives motion to the bean by drawing it
self into a close coil and then suddenly
uncoiling in such a way as to strike
egainst the upper part of the cavity it
occupies, Im Mexico these beans in
great numbers sre to be scen skipping
over the ground under the frees upon
which they are produced. They thus
skip and roll along the ground until they
lodge in some hole or cavity where they
are likely to be covered with earth by the
first rains. The worm is a provision of
nature by means of which the beans are
distributed and planted. When the
beans wera bronght here our Com-
stockers did not the ** concealment ”
of the “worm i’ the bud” worry their
“damask” cheeks, but ‘‘busted” the

A MEXICAN PYRAMID,
Simi
Fresh prooks sre r.ported to have
been discoveral of the existence of an
ancient ocivilgation in Mexico. In
Bonors, shout sixty miler southeast of
the town of Madeleine, some explorers
have found in the heart of a virgin forest
# prramid which is four thonsand three
hundred and fifty feet round the base
and seven hundred and fifty feet high—
that is to say nearly double the size of
the great pyranid of Cheops. From the
base fo { » summit there is a roadway on
which veliiclosean travel round the vast
erection in a spiral. The outside walls
are built of granite blocks carefully
| tooled and belded. A little further off
i is a hillock, wih hundreds of caverns or
chambers cut in it, from five feet to if.
teen feet widoand ten feet to fifteen foot
long. They have no windows, and are
jentered by the roof. The walls are
{covered with hieroglyphics and curious
pictures with the feet and hands of men.
Stone utensils have also been found
there. Who the builders of these ancient
monuments were is still unsettled, but,
according to El Liberal, they probably
belong:d to Mayos, who formerly in.
habited Sonora, and were a different race
from tis Indians, having blue eyes, a
white skin, and blonde hair,

CANNIBALISM.
Until Mr. Hutchinson wrote it was
not generally credited to eannibalism,
but his evidence is not to be doubted
“In 1850,” he says, "*homan flesh was
exposed as butcher's meat in the market
ot Duketown, old Calabar.” It almost
seems that some religions grounds may
eringte them, a8 the same writers says:
"n Brass (or the Mimbe country) can-
nibalism often ocours. Even within the
last year a chief of that district, named
Imamy, killed two Aerseka people who §
were micrificed to the manes of his
father. In Brass, as in Bonny, they eat
all enemies takra in war, and they put
forth, as a justification for this, that de.
vouring the flesh of their enemies makes
them brave.” The account given by the
same writer of the killing of a native for
the purposes of cannibalism, of which he
was an eye witness, is most admirably
graphic and striking.
