REV. ISAAC GRIER, D. D., DEAD.
Miflinburg, Jane 17.—Rev. Dr. Grier,
died this morning at 1 o'clock, of heart
disease, aged 78 vears, 6 months, He
was born at Jersey Shore, Pa., in Janua~
ry, 1806. in the fall of 1820 he entered
theological seminary at Princeton. In
1832 he was licensed by the presbytery
of Northumberland, at Warrior Run.
The first year after leaving Princeton, he
supplied the congregations of Washing-
ton, in White Deer valley, and Shamos
kin, in Northumberland county. Ia Oec-
tober, 1834, he accepted a call from the
Washington congregation for half of his
time, He gave up Shamokin and gave
that half of his time to the Bethel
church in White Deer twp. On the first
Sabbath of May, 1835, be commenced
preaching to the Buffalo congregation
and has been their pastor ever since,
nearly half a century, with the exception
of one vear, from October, 18562 to Octo-
ber, 1853, during which time he served
the Washington congregation. In 1835
he was married to Miss Anna Campbell,
sister of Dr. Campbell, for many years
president of Rutgers College, New Bruns-
wick, N.J. She is still living. They had
no children. In 1859 Washington Col-
jege, Pa., conferred him the honorary de-
gree of Doctor of Divioity—an honor
which he well deserved.
His death has cast a gloom over this
entire community-—especially on acs
count of ita suddenness. Last Sunday he
preached at Buffalo X Roads in the
morning and here in the afternoon. He
was not very well and delivered his ser-
mon sitting. Yesterday he walked our
sireets as usoal—this morning he is a
corpse. In his last hour he found solace
in the faith he preached for so many
years, and now he has gone to dwell
with the Master he served so faithfully
here.
The funeral took placa at Mifilinburg
on Friday, 20.— Journal.

BISHOP SIMPSON DEAD.
Philadelphia, Pa, June 18.—The sen-
ior bishop of the Methodist Episcopal
church in America, the Rev. Matthew
Simpson, D. D., LL. D., peacefully and
quietly relinquished his hold oa this
mortal life a little before nine oclock this
morning, at his home in this city. His
wife and children were at his bedside
when, as the hands of the ments] clock
neared the hour of nine, a peaceful
smile stole over his lips, his eyes were
closed, his bands were folded on his
breast and the aged bishop lay dead.
The disease which caused his death
was nervous prostration aad general de-
Lility—a general wearing out of the
body. The pishop, like the founder jof
the church of his choice, was a man of
strong thysique and remarkable will-
power, thought tall in stature and rather
spare and thio. He was a tireless work-
er in and for the church, and seemed to
Lave bat little physical ailment or weak-
ness till several years ago when the in-
firmities of age suddenly became plainly
apperent while he was preaching in San
Francisco where he was attacked with
nervous prostration, from which he nev-
er fully recovered. A second attack, just
before the session of general couference
last month, resulted in his death to~day.
Rev. Mathew Simpson was born June
1, 1811, in Cadiz, Ovio, and was there-
sre almost 73 yesrs of age.

A HORSE DIFFICULTY SEITLED.
Friday night Frank Alexander was ar-
rested for procuring a horse of "Squire
Smith, of Centre county, 1n a way which
was not altogether satisiactory to the lat-
ler gentleman. It appears Alexander
held a note for $160 dollars against Smith
which limitation had dissolved, although
there was a credit of four dollars made
on it which Smith knew nothing of. Mr.
Smith owned a horse which he valued at
$165 and Alexander concluded to pur.
chase it, payiog for it with the note be
held and five dollars cash, Smith on ex-
amining the role of money received ob-
jected to accepting the note, but Mr. Al-
exander drove off with the animal, when
tue former sent word to Milgoy to Lave
the latter intercepted and arrested, bat
Alexander eluded him by taking a back
road to Lewistown with the horse, Word
was telephoned to this place for the au-
thorities to watch for him and he was
arrested about 11 o'clock that night by
officers Price and Wimer, as be rode to
his home on the animal in dispute. The
horse was taken charge of and the man
lodged in jail notil next day when Smith
arrived and the gatter was compromised
by Alexander giving up the horse and
paying all costs, — Lewistown, Gazelle, 18,

he watches to catch his victim alone.
Then he sneaks up to him, and, if he is

have carried to such an extreme, It bores
them to make the effort to show discrim-

The banjo fever has been raging all
