THE TERRIBLE FECTS OF
EXPLOSION HAVANA.
Havana, April 30.—The effects of the
explosion yesterduy were terrible. Up
to the present time the dead number 21,
and the wounded 79. The latter are seats
tered all over town having been wound
ed by the falling debris; many are seri~
ously injured. Of the detachment of 27
goldiers in the magazine al the time of
the explosion 8 escaped unhurt, The
magazine contained one million cartridg-
es, 200,000 kilograms of powder and one
barrel of dynamite. The warchouse of
Nan Jose and the planter’s warehouse
sustained serious damages, as did the
several churches and many houses. The
second shock was stronger than the first,
It was not caused by the explosion of gas
as was stated yesterday but by the explo
sion of the magazine. The first shock was
Jess violent because it was caused by
powder which was drying in the open

A BODY FULL OF BULLET HOLES,
Charlestown, West Va, April 28.—The
mail ridey from Boone county brought
word here to-day of a tragedy ena ted on
Saturday night. The body of Sheriff Ad-
kin was found hangiog to a tree by the
thumbs and full of bullet | The
corpse bore evidence of the most horri-
ble treatment. An armed posse was sent
out to scour the woods It is well known
that the erime was committed by a gang
known as the Jamses, from whom Adkin
had received several threatening letters
He was a vigorous officer and had made
narelenting war on this gang, which is
the last relic of the famous KR: d Men of
West Virginis,

THE STORM'S FORCE.
Xenia, Ohio, April 28 —The rcene of
Jamestown this morning was even Worse
than expected. Fully one-third of the
town is ruins. The force of the wind
was terrific. Houses not entirely demol-

roads are impassible in the direction of

Sorghum sugar, reported by experts to
be of good flavor and quality, has been
made this year for the first time in the
neighborhood of Phenix, Arizona.

Gen. Derdan is said to have invented a
now fuse for shell projectiles, which can-
pot fail to effect explosion at the right
moment. The principle involved consists
in utilizing the rotary motion of the pro-
jectile to ignite a fuse after the former
has mados certain number of revolutions.
The rifling of the gun determines the
space passed over in each revolution, thus
permitting the adj astment.
Solidification of nitrogen, according to
an experiment by M. 8. Wroblewski by
means of boiling oxygen, is effected at an
approximate temperature of 1868 C. As
yet he declines to explain the process by
which ho arrives at the result in detail ;
but he adds that when subjected to this
intense degree of cold the nitrogen is
clearly solidified and falls to the bottom
of the vessel in which it is contained like
flakes of snow of a very rernarkable size.
A soft alloy which sttnches itself so
firmly to the surface of metals, glass, and
porcelain that it can be employed to sol-
der articles that will not bear. Jrigh fem-
perature can, as the Pharmaceutical Ree-
ord asserts, be made as follows: Copper
dust obtained by precipitation from a so~
lution of the sulphate by means of zine is
put in a cast-iron or porenisin-lined mor-
tar and mixed with strong sulphurio acid,
specific gravity, 1.85. From 20 to 80 or 36
parts of the dust are takm, according to
the hardness desired. To the cake formed
of acid and copper there is added, under
constant stirring, 70 pruts of mercury.
When well mixed the amalgam is care
fully rinsed with warm water to remove
all the acid, and then sef; aside to cool.
In 10 or 12 hours it js hard enough to
soratoh tin, If it is to bo used now it is
to be heated #0 hot thw: when worked
over and brayed in a. mo tar it becomes
as 8oft us wax. In this ductile form it
oan be spread out cm any smarface, to which
it adheres with great tenacity when itgets
cold and hard.
