Minister Sargent’s Position.
WasHINGTON, March 28.-Secretary Fre
linghuysen has received no communication
from Minister Sargent indicating a desire to
remain at Berlin and not accept the Bt,
Potorsburg mission. It is stated at the de
partment that the duties of minister at Ber.
lin will devolve upon Mr. Sidney Everett, of
the United States legation at that city, and
that the post at Berlin will remain unfilled
for some time. It is stoutly denied on all
sides that Secretary Folger's name has been
considered in connection with the Berlin
mission.
No credencatis given to the report from
Paris that Mr. Sargent'informed the Berlin
correspondent of La France that he will re-
fuse the mission to St. Petersburg sud will
remain provisionally at Berlin
Paris, March 20, —~La France publishes a
later dispatch from its Berlin correspondent
confirming the statements that Minister Bar.
gont will refuse the mission to Bt Peters
burg, and adds that Mr. Bargent has ex.
pressed his intention to retire from diplo-
matic pursuits absolutely.

therein, The president thinking it may be
agreeable to you, nominated you as minister
to St. Petersburg, and your nomination,
without referemce to any committee, was
immediately and unanimously confirmed by

explains that he did so on the amsuranos that
Gen. Gresham desired the office, and that
the petition was being circulated with his

Queen Victoria's Youngest Son Die:
Suddenly at Cannes,
Loxpox, March 28 Considerable gloom
was cast over the city by the receipt of tele
graphic messages from Cannes stating thal
the Duke of Albany (Prince Leopold)
dled suddenly at his hotel there to-day.
The duke was seized with a fit, and de
spite the ‘best medical attendance he died
without being restored to consciousness
The physicians attribute his death to over
exertion aud fatigue brought ou by the
duke’s indulging too freely in gayeties. Only
last Tuesday night, in spite of the orders ©
his physicians, he danced several hours and
returned home quite prostrated,
{His royal highness, Prince Leopold George
Duncan Albert, was the yeungest son ©
Queen Victoria, snd next to the younges
child, the Princess Beatrice being four yean
younger. He was born April 7, 1853, ant

of Clarence and Baron Arklow. He wan

Private Detectives Pursuing Him,
An Arrest to Be Made.

the poor girl's murderer. It is confident)
mssorted that within a week an importan
arrest will be made, and that the evidence
will be of such a character as to fully justify
the commitment of the suspected criminal
for trial before the superior court. The
general supposition that the search for
the murderer was abandoned Immediately
after the termination of the coroner's
investigation is incorrect Detective Arnold,

information as he obisined he promptly
turned over to State Attorney Fessenden, of

now appears that two private detectives,
man and a woman, have for a long time been
reexploring the fiekli which the euriler de
tectives were supposed to have gone over x
thoroughly, and that new facts bave been
obtained. The detectives bave guarded their
