Senator Youngblood Claiming to Have
Been Insultod by the Governor,
Turnton, N. J., Feb. 5, —Mr, Youngblood
furnished the senate with a gonuine sensa-
tion last night. In responsa to Gov, Abbett’s
special message, Salling attention to the re
fusal of a Hatkensadk Cemetery assodiation
to permit the burial within its limits of a
worthy colored man's body, the senator
Crew up a bill to meet all such cases, When
it came up on second reading Mr, Young.
blood rose and stated that he ‘had had the
hardihood, temerity or impudence, or what-
ever it might be characterized, to call on
Gov. Abbett at tho executive chamber to
ask his opinion of the Hackensack bill. Had
the governor,” he said, ‘quietly kicked him
(Youngblood) {out he could not have
more hastily followed the bill He
had framed the bill upon the
basis of the governor's message of last week
and his éxcellgnoy would learn before the
clofe of his gubernatorial term that there
were people in the state beside Gov, Abbett.
For himself he did not choose to take the
governor's impudence and was indifferent as
to whether he, the governor, liked it or not,
but he wished to state publicly that he had
been insulted by the governor, and that any
gentleman who should call at the executive
chamber must take the same chances,
Mr. Youngblood declined to talk after the
adjournment, except to say, curtly: “I dont
propose to put up with any of Abbett's inso-
lence.” Gov. Abbett said to the American
Press representative that he did not insult
Mr. Youngblood; he was opposed to the pro-
vision of the bill which exempted religious
associations which own or control a ceme
tary; they have no right to discriminate.
“Mr. Youngblood,” he added, “ventured to
suggest that I did not understand the bill,
and I took occasion to inform him that my
knowledge of the subject surpassed his. He
took umbrage at this, I suppose, but cer
tainly he was not insulted.”
GAY HEAD'S HORROR.
The Investigation Still in Progress—
An Alleged Heartless Admission,
Bosrox, Feb. 7.—The official investigation
into the cause of the City of Columbus dis
aster was continued. Roderick McDonald,
quartermaster of the ill-fated ship, thirty.
five years of age, and a follower of the sea
for the last eighteen years, testified. His
testimony, however, was remarkable only
for what he didn't know.
Capt. Burnham, of the board of inspectors
of stzam vessels for the Boston district,
stated that the captain of the steamship
Glaucus had admitted to him privately that
the Glaucus the wreck of the steam
ship City of Columbus after daylight on the
morning of the disaster and recognized her;
that the signals of distress were seen from
the Glaucus, but that the latter steamer did
not stop because the captain did not wish to
be delayed on his trip. “This,” said Capt.
Burnham, “is one of the most heartless
things I ever heard of. It was outrageous,
end 1 propose to summon the entire crew of
the Glaucus before the board. 1 never heard
of such a violation of that holy but unwrit-
ten law of humagity so essentially and so
generally resgectod among seamen.”
The Queen's Speech,
Loxnox, Feb, 5.— Parliament reassembled
to-day; Charles Bradlaugh occupied a back
seat. The queen's speech congratulates her
faithful commons upon the satisfactory re
lations existing between Great Britain and
foreign nations. The Madagascar incident
had been arranged cordially with France
A commission had been appointed and was
sitting in Paris discussing the regulation of
the Newfoundland histories which, it was
hoped, would be concluded satisfactorily to
both the United States and Great Britain
An agreement had been made with Portugal
respecting the interests of that country and
England in the Congo country. Arrange
ments were progressing favorably towards
the assumption of diplomatic relations with
Mexico, and negotiations had been com:
menced for commercial treaties with Turkey
and Japan. The treaties with Spain and
Corea had been signed. Unforseen calamities
in Egypt bad prevented the evacus
tion of that country by the Driv
fsh troops, but it was hoped that
the existing difficulties there would
be speedily adjusted. It was expected that
the Transvaal negotiations would soon reach
& favorable conclusion. The social condi
tion of Ireland exhibited a substantial im
provement. Agrarian crime bas sensibly
diminished, and law has Leen everywhere
upheld. The estimates for the services of
the coming year are in a forward state of
preparation, and will shortly be submitted to
you. The following bills are recommended
for early action by Parliament: For the ex
tension of the franchise reform inthe local
government, including local option; the
London municipal government; the new
shipping measure and Sanday closing in

owing to dullness in manufactures and

The Anarchists are making every effort to
inflame the populace to acts of violence,
They openly denounce as traitors to the peo-
ple the Socialists DBebel and Leibknecht,
members of the lower house of the Baxon
parliament, who have always been consid-
ered as among the most radical champions
of the popular cause, These gentlemen were
formerly members of the Reichstag, where
they were among the most persistent Oppo-
nents of Prince Bismarck's policy, and in
1572 they wore condemned to two years
imprisonment for tressonable utterances,
Their efforts have mainly been directed,
however, to securing reform through legis
lation, and their methods are too moderate
to suit the ideas of the present leaders of
the Anarchist faetion, who have caused
placards to be posted in the Royal Palace at
Dresden, proclaiming that blood alone can
satisfy their hatred of the aristooracy.

HARD TO BELIEVE.

was swoolen as big as a barrel and he
had been given up as incurable and lay
at death's door. Yet such a cure wasac

BULWER LYTTON'S BRIDGE.
Where it Touches the Shores and the
Great Columns in Midstream,
“What a beautiful bridge between old age and
childhood is religion, How intuitively the child
begins with prayer and worship on entealng life,
aud how intuitively, on quitting life, the old man
turns back toprayer and worship, putting himself
again side by side with the infant,” remarks Sir
E. Bulwer Lytton, in his “Strange Slory.”
Yes, but between its distant abutments the
bridge of life has many high and awful aches,
through which the wild waters desh and rons
in wrath and desolation. Prayer and worship
alone do not sustain these, Nature's solid rocks
must He unshdaken beneath, and human art and
skill must rear and solidify the structure over-
head. God's will Is best exemplified in the laws He
