the middle weight champion of this state,
and Tom Walling fought a prize fight in the
old Carbonate theatre before 1,200 specta-
tors. Healy was apparently in better trim
than his epponent, and was the favorite at
fifty to forty before a blow had been struck,
Walling rushed the work and soon showed
that he outclassed Haley, who is a member
of the fire department. The first round
lasted four minutes and thirty seconds. The
second was a ‘hot one.” Haley tried to rush
Walling, but the latter was cool and skilful
and again showed that “there was only one
in it.” The bettiug was now 100 to 50 on
Walling. During the fourth round Haley

WasminaTON, Nov. 24.—All the members
of the cabinet were present at the meeting,
and the session was prolonged until nearly
4 o'clock by the discussion of matters incor-
porated in the president's message. A de
cison was also seached in the matter of a
surgeon general of the army. The president
stated that after dus consideration of the
subject he had selected Col. Robert Murray
to fill the vacancy. This is in the direct
line of civil service reform, as Col. Murray
was entitled by seniority to the position. He
was appointed lieutenant and assistant sur-
geon in the army June 29, 1846; promoted to
be captain and assistant surgeon June 28,
1851; major and surgeon June 23, 1560; leu-
tenant colonel and assistant military pure
veyor July 28, 15866, and colonel and surgeon
June 26, 1876

Cal Nov. 24. —Eight German officers
were among the commanders of the Egyptian
troops under Kicks Pasha, and doubtless
perished in the massacre of El Obeid. The
statement is confirmed that the Egyptians
were successful in the first attack, and that
Gen. Hicks, believing El Mahdi's forces
routed, accepted the services of a guide and
was treacherously led into a defile where he
was fallen upon by the ambushed rebels and
