MADISONBURG, Comuinnion in the town hall on last Sunday morning by Rey. Zimmerman was very largely attended. Prospects for the new church are very good ; the brick are now all on the ground ready to commence work. When finished it will no doubt be the finest church in this sec- tion, Part of George Reber's steam saw mill was burned one night last week ; no insurance. Samuel Zeigler is puttiog a very handsome pavement in front of his house. Elias Miller lost a very fine hog last week for which he will pay a large reward when returned. Mrs, Henry Ha- gel is still walking on her crutches, and no doubt will have to as long as she lives, as her limb is not improving any. The Lutheran choir meets every other evens ing at private houses. Planting potatoes and setting onions is all the go in oar town at present. There is talk of putting up a telephone from Klinefelter's saw mill to the town hotel for the accommo dation of other parties to connect with the main line; it is certainly needed as the houses are a lit le far apart and a good dea! of business to be done in the way of talking. The Madisonburg hotel is now under the control of T. F. Moyer. H. R. Feidler's new wagon can be seen on the streets again since I, E. Shafer came back from Kansas. Wonder whether that Houtzdale man would sell his Bible which was printed in 1737. We would like to purchase it for our new charch. Dr. J. W. H. Reber, formerly of Kutztown, will open his office in the Madisonburg hotel. Speckled beauties —trout—can now be legally captured. Wonder whether I. E. Bhafer, Lew Rush and Prof. Wolf got any last week whilst fishing through Lauorel run. Brus. Joseph and William Rochau have re. turned from Montana. They do not speak very well of that country. Rev. P. C. Weidmeyer is making ready to build a new summer house, . The Alabama Treaty, on whose provisions two continents hung breathlessly, had been signed and sent to the Senate, This was MANY years ago. A copy came to us as legitimately as any piece of news comes into the Press office, but it happened so that we could not tell where it came from We were brought before the Senate and gentto a committee, and we refused to answor and tell where the treaty as printed in the Tribune came from. We were lock- ed up for a fortnight. The ‘great public was with us, and we had moreapplications for our autographs than could pay postsge on, and we had of wine, pases of brandy, demijobus of whisky, bexes of cigars, woodcock, terripin,’ canvasback ducks, flowers such things galore’ Senators came toour rooms for drinks and lunches, and the whole thing from begin ning te end way a great joke.
