even from adjoining counties, will enter
the new vyear—ISSl—better dressed,
better suited and better fitted in Cloth-

A Pittsburg dispatch says an epi-
demic of scarlet fever is raging at Houtz-
dale, Clearfield county, a. It only be-
gan a few days ago. Thirty children
have died, eighteen of them yesterday.

~The Teachers’ County Institute last
week was attended by about 160 or 170
teachers—the number in the county be-
ing some over 200. The program was a
good one, and so far as the deliberations
success in which we congratulate Super-
intendent Meyer, who has so success-
fully closed his second term as Co.

—Troubles in Ireland are growing
worse and over twenty thousand Brit
ish soldiers are already sent to the is-
land, and an outbreak is looked for any
day. How fortunate for the Irish in
this country, besides being under the
flag of Freedom they can go to the

—Whew, but it was cold last week!
We do not think that a colder day was
registered in these parts than Thursday,
20-~at b 4. 1m, the thermometer stood 17
degrees below zero, and about 7 a. m, at
14, It continued under zero all day
notwithstanding the sun kept shining,
and continued cold all night. The cold
wave struck us about Tuesday, altho’
we might call it cold for the two previ-
ous days. Some 4 or 5 inches of snow
had fallen, which made good sleighing,
for all who relished it in a north pole
atmosphere. There was quite a brisk
wind, which caused the roads to be
blocked somewhat with snow drifts
Friday morning, 31, was cold as previ-
ous morning.
—We gee from the Lewistown Gazelle
of 22 ult.. that the fools are not all dead
vet—we mean those infernal fools who
“didn’t know it was loaded.” That pa~
