AMONG POLIT ICIANS
THAT GARFIELD WILL BE
WITHDRAWN,
Philadelphia, June 13.—~There has been
talk in the inner cirele of republican
politicians here of the possibility of Guay-
field’s name being taken off the national
ticket. It is becoming painfully apparent
that the republican party cannot move
forward to success with the load of ob-
loquy-which their candidate’s connection
with the Credit Mobilier and other con-
gressional scandals has brought upon
them. Hence the talk of forcing him to
withdraw, In the event of his with-
drawel it is thought electoral tickets
wonld be run in the seversl states pledg-
ed to camdidates who will ait the preer-
ence of the republican voters with a view
of permitting the electoral college to se-
lect in the end,

St. Louis, June 12~-The recent rise in
the Upper Mississippi swept away about
60,000 tons of ice stored on the river bank.
A dispatch from Chippewa Falls says
that 850,000,000 feet of logs broke away
and went down the river in a solid mass,
A later dispatch says that 55,000,000 feet
of Yellow River logs were carried away.
It is estimated that 200,000,000 feet passed
