THE CHRISTMAS SEASON.
Christmas hs always been a joyous sea- ,
son from lime immemorial, and has been j
duly celebrated in our American cities, (
although not perhaps to the extent that (
the residents of the old world have always (
greeted this first of all the holidays. Of ,
late years, bowey#r, there hss bern a nota
his increase in this observance of the
Christmas festival in our land, until now ,
ot even Germany exceeds us In the res- {
[ pect we pay to this lime-honored and sa
I ored holiday.
I For weeks beforehand our principal ■
street* are crowded with happy peoplo in
tent on making others happy on the day j
which, by common consent, leads all j
others. The beautifully decorated store* j
are crowded with eager customers, and al- !
together the joyous Christmas season with t (
us lasts not a day only but entire weeks, j j
and leavens the whole year with its happy |
influence*.
This train of thought was suggested by
a call on Monday at the establishment of
Messrs. Strawbridge A Clothier, at Eighth
and Market streets, whera the sight pie. 1
-cnted was calculated to arouse enthusi- 1
asm in the breat of the veriest stoic. One !
week ago, when we paid tbo last of many j 1
visits this season, in search of articles for j'
' housekeeping needs, we found the great .'
| bouse thronged with buyers, but all intent j <
1 .>n goods for personal apparel of house- j
I keeping uses. All the season the same i
1 business activity prevailed to an extent j I
; that vre have never seen riWiled in other j I
cities, but there was no sign or token ol , ]
Christmas in the air. j
Yeterday how changed the scene 1 Ir. j i
one short weeks as if by magic, taa great j j
bouse presented an altered aspect, and on I j
every side of the counters exhibited ar-i|
i ticle* ot beauty as well as of use. chosen |
| months ago at the source* of production
( in the old world, but oniy within a few
' days placed on sale.
While everything appertaining to the
usual stock of the house was still exhibit- I
d, yet the vast display of articles belong- '
ing especially to the domain of art and '
beauty made the scene one that could not 1
fail to impress every observer with the
beauty and life ef the Christmas season* 1
A* well might a reporter attempt to cata
logue ne of our great libraries by simply
spending an hour in inspection, or to give
an index of the British Mujcum in a hasty i
newspaper article, as to try to enumerate
the myriads of beautiful things displayed.
It is sufficient to *ay that any one who has
not fixed upon a gift in some special line
of business, as, for instance, bocks or jew
elry. can hardly fail to find in thia vast
collection just '.list would be most accept
able to the recipient.
We have never in any season of the
year, in pleasant weather, happened in at
Mes/rs. Strawbridge A Clothier"* estab
lishment without being intereated, hut the
•pectacle presented ju*t now cannot, we
helseve, be seen elsewhere, and it one that
must be in the highest degree interesting
■ lo every observer. We desire to add our
sincere appreciation of a firm that is doing
so much to raise the standard of Philadel
phia merchantile reputation, and by tbeir
business, skill, genius and well-directed
energy contribute so much to place our
city, in a business sense, in the foremost
rank of the great cities of the great Repub
lic.—Philadelphia Press, Dec. 17th, 1879.

'l2 BOYS MURDERED AND THEIR
MURDERERS LYNCHED.
Macon, Ga., Dec. 22.—A special dis
patch to the Telegraph and Messenger
says:
Two Irish lads, Edward Harvey and
f Jameß M'Geever, dry goods peddlers, were
, murdered on Fridey by a party of negroes
l near Jurrigan, Russell county, Alabama,
r and their bodies thrown into Chattahooche
river. The murder was discovered oa
Saturday and two negroes were arrested
arid confessed, implicating two others.
A large crowd of whites and blacks as
t sembled on Sunday al 4 p. m. and decid
' ed to hang tbe two murderers, which was
done forthwith. They displayed a sullen
i indifference, and asked no mercy." The

A WOMAN TO BE HANGED
Harrisburg, Pa , December In. 1879 Al
Carlisle to-dav Mrs. Catharine Sec.', aged
about forty-five year*, wa* sentenced t>
be hanged by Judge Herman alter lie had
reviewed forty seven reasons for a ticw
trial and refused to gran', it. The Judge
was considerably affected when ho pro
nounced the judgment, but tbe condemn
ed did not appear to be n. >ved by the ad
verse decision of the Court. Before the
Judge pronounced the sentence -he said
—"I am not guilty. A* God is my ever
lasting judge, I am not guilty."
The murder for which Mrs. Seel! is to
he hanged was committed in Carlis'e
nearly eight months ago and the victim
was Mrs Mary Kiohl, aged eighty-one
years. Tbo means employed was poison,
large quantities of which wore f inj in
two tin pots in her house and in the st >tn
ach of the deceased. I)u,-.*.g the old la
dy's illness Mr*. Seell bad paid several
visits to her house and pro*, led her with
coffee, which, with other circumtan. **,
ded to Mrs. Seel. * arrvat There is
strong suspicion that she was employed
to poison the old lady by a justice of the
peace named Wynkoop, who wi'.i be tried
in January for complicity in the crime.

FISH KILLED BY ELECTRIC
ITY.
A correspondent of Land an i Water
savs : A curious iucident nt the whole
of tbe occupants of a small fish pond
being destroyed by a tiash of light
ning, ia reported from Grand
Duchv of Na*au. The A'tn vnuer

thunder and hail storm at night time,
a tUsh of lightning eiruek a small
pood, well stocked with various kind
offish, the property of lite pastor of
the parish. The following morning
tha whole of the fish were discovered
dead upon the surface of the water.
They had all the appearance of hav
ing bees half boiled, and crumbled
to pieces at the leatt touch just a* in
the case with fish ufter being boiled.
Neithei anv external nor internal in
jurv could "be observed, the scales be
ing* intact and the swimming bladder
filled and well preserved. The water
in the poud was still muddy and dud
the morning after the storm, as if the
lightning had orly then struck it.
THE EBB OF THE CHINESE
The Chinese in California have be
gun to go. The steamer that sailed
from San Francisco for Hong Kong
on the 15th, took 901 of them to their
native land. The p-rt etati.-tie* of
San Francisco show that the arrivals
of Chioese during the year ending
November 1, wete 6,128. and depar
tures 8,746 —of whom 6,929 went to
China, and 2,217 to Honolulu—the
excess of departures over arrivals be
iDg 2.618. It is estimated that there
are 62,000 Chinese on the Pacific
coast, which shows that this popu'a
tion is decreasing instead of increas
iyg, for when the anti-Chinese agita
tion was begun, a few years ago, thees
timate was 100,000. The total number
of Chinese arrivals for the twenty
years ending December, 1878, was
230,430. and the departures and
deaths 134,491. At this rate the
Chinese cheap labor will soon be un
known in California.
