THE HOUSE CLEANING.
Mr. Walter Ammidon laid his knife
ami fork down with a gesture of abso

" Not gii.ng ti oliKui house again, Mrs.

Mr. Ammidon gave a little groan at
tlie sad fate that awaited him—that

He was a gentleman, however. Mr.
Ammidon was, sunl ao repressed hia ill

malicious iustigatnvn of his Satanic
majesty for the torment of luankimh
4 ' We'll be s*> nice ami sweet ami clean,"
Mrs, Beuevhct went on, with horrible
cheerfulness, "and I've been thinking
that I'll have your r*oui> newly paperisl,
Mr. Ammidou. I'm sure you'll like
tliat ?"
"Very much —when it's done, mad
am."
And he cut his meal short and rushed
out of doors into the oh>l, fresh t V'tolwr
eveniug air.
" Ah, Iwh ! 1 can already experience
the agonies of last spring ! G'kkl heav< n !
the woman must lx' made of cast iron to
attempt such a siege again. It is no
wonder he r husband ditsl if he sufferevl
two attacks of house cleaning a year, and
I shall die or gtvw crazy unless I leave
her—bat I snpjxvse all women are
equally idiotic."
A groan of genuine misery broke from
his lips as he strvxle along, his hat
jammed over his eyes—very u:' ";e the
handsome gentlemiui he really wa-, with
his frank, cheery face and pleasant
mouth, with tlie white, even teeth, and
the half curling, tliiek ilark hiur, and tin
grave, intelligent eyes, that nothing
could ruffie as the idea of Mr-.
Benedict's semi-annual 44 tearing
up " —a courteous, refined, genial
gentleman, whom society found a puzzle
because of his jx'rsistent bachelorhood,
when it knew of at least a half-dozen
women who would have jump*-1 at the
faintest chance of an offer of marriage
fpm him—who himself wondered why
he never hail falien in love—and whom
pretty little Mrs. Bill Iwiu, the blue
eyed, blonde haired widow, with no in
eumberanee, a house of her own, a- ' .ui
income of three thousand a year, often
felt quite piqued with that he wa.- so very
unimpressi* >a bit*.
So Mr. Ammidon strode along, almost
meclianically turning c-inier-, his pace
gradually growing slower, and then, all
at once, lie beard the brilliant tones
of a piain* as some drilled liatnls playetl,
and, hxikiug up, found himself in front
of a warmly lighted, cheery, hospitable
house—the very house where Mrs. Bes
sie Baldwin lived.
The contrast was so startlingly vivid
between the pienres in his imagination
tliat he involuntarily paused—one, the
picture of the way Mrs. Benedict's
boarding house would look next day, the
other of how Mrs. Baldwin's elegant
little home always appeared when In
called there and a- it appeared i. ■
through tlie lac*- curtains—quiet, wurrn,
hospitable, inviting.
And like a revelation from heaven it
came to him—an idea, a determination
tliat was so strong, so resistli -s tiiat he
walked forthwith up Mrs. Baldwin's front
steps and rang the door hell, wondering
as he did why the music had ceas*.-l an 1
where the player had gone.
" I'll marry her if she'll have me, ami
then we'll are how many times a year
the house i-> cleaned ; tliat is, if "
Then the d<x>r opened and the maid
invited him into the parlor, with the in
formation that Mrs. Baldwin had just
run into a neighbor's by the side gate,
bat would be back directly if the sick
child was better she had gone to see.
Mr. Ammidon ensconci-d himself in
the easiest chair in the room—a great,
deep, wide, cushioned affair that was
drawn up by the little low table under the
chandelier.
" Bless her pretty blue eyes ! Gone
to see a sick child ; I like that—l like
it. What a blessing that it occurred to
me to offer myself to such a good hearted,
cheerful, tender, fond little woman us
she is ; and what a miraculous fool I
have been not to have done it long ago.
Why, liouestly, I feed as if I had been
in love with her all along ; and I believe
I have been, and never knew it."
His handsome head leaned comforta
bly against the cushions, and his well
shaped, well booted feet were crossed on
a low ottoman near the fire that burned
cosily and brightly.
He waited ten—twenty—thirty min
utes, and When she did not come at the
expiration of three-quarters of an hour
Mr. Ammidon was conscious of a keen
ypsappointment that astonished hiins'-lf.
"At all events, my object shall'be ac
complished, so far as I can accomplish
it," he thought.
And he took his gold and ivory pen,
and wrote an ardent, courteous, unde
niably eager statement of his case, asking
her to be his loved wife, and begged an
answer on tli > morrow, when she shonld
be visiting Mrs. Benedict.
"I accidentally learned you would take
tea with us to-morrow night," lie wrote,
"and I must know at once when I meet
you if lam the blessed man I hope hi
be. If you can look favorably on my
suit let me know by answering 'Yea' to
the first question I put t.i you. If it is
otherwise,l will not trouble you further."
Then he signed himself suitably, put
the folded and addressed note conspicu
ously on the top of a pile of uewspaper
and sheet music on the piano, and took
his leave, in a strange whirl of excite
ment and expectation.
Half an hour later Mrs. Baldwin came
in, stopping as she passed the dining
room door to sneak to the girl.
"You carried all those papers and the
music up stairs, Annie, as I told you ?"
"The very minute the gentleman went
away, Mrs. Baldwin—it was Mr. Ammi
don, and he came just as yon went out."
"Oh, that's too bad that I was not in !
Mrs. Mav's little Edith is very, very sick,

Then, never knowing her fate was iu
it, she turned her Iv-autiful fiuv ourelo -
ly aw a v ami withdrew her luunl, and iui
swered liiiu:
" No; I thought it was charmingly
pleasant."
And Mr. Aiumidon recoiled as if lie
had been struck a dreadful blow, and
eiiuld not, for the life of him, console
himself with the conviction that women
were f<s>ls and men were well rid of
them.
The lievt day he told Mrs. 1 ten o lie I hi

sent to a hotel.
Mr. Auimidon deterimmd to kill two
b-.rda with one stone to get out of the
p ■ hility of luiviim to meet ofwn Mr-.
Bern diet's friend, the pretty, iu-rcil -s
little woman, than whom he had never
loved another, and to make his home
where house cleaning was uukuowu, ami
Bessie cried till her eyes wetv rid ami
swollen to tliiuk how entirely indifferent
Mr. Ammidou was to her.
Ami the winter crept softly Along in
sot*!, white, snowy robes, and several
time-Mrs. Baldwin saw Mr. Amiaidoi
driving past, although he didn't do more
as lie passed than glance carelessly at the
window ami bow.
And the sweet, warm spring days
came, ami with perfumy hints of roses
ami woodbine, and fresh emerald leaves,
and climbing vines, and bursting bh -
soma, came 1 Jessie Baldwin's fate, iu the
shajie of the unromautic, the inevitable
spring cleaning that must lie undertaken
and accomplished, no matter how
temptingly balmly sunshine and fragrant
breezes and cloudless skies clamor for
promenades ami drives in order to wel
come them.
Thus it happened that Mr-. Baldwin
wa.- ensconced in one of her chambers,
with a bine veil tied tightly over her
golden hair ami her muslin dress pinned
up in front, disclosing ravishiugly lovely
feet despite the half-worn hoots, with a
basket lying in readiness Ik side her, imd
her faithful ally, Annie, waiting to con
sign piles of waste to deathly ignominy,
and the pajs-r mid rag man.
"Only one pile more, Annie, and
aren't you glad we're so nearly done?
Here, you sort the papers, and I'll
that nothing worth saving has bet u put
writh this music."
And a minute after the soft, rustling
stillness was broken bv a sudden ejacu
lation from Mrs. Baldwin, ami Annie
looked up, wide-eyed, to we her r< ading
a penciled note, witii paling face ami
trembling lips.
" It's a letter I hwt, that's all, Annie.
Go on with the ]taper. There is a man
at the d> >r. I'll go down. You can
finish.
Ami with fluttering heart and eyes that
were auspiciously bright, Mrs. Ik —ie
went down stairs, gla.l of an opportunity
to get away by herself a few minutes to
think it all over, to try to realize that it
was true that Walter Ammidon had
loved her.
And she brushed away tears tliat were
both rapturous and full of disappoint
ment and fear, ami ojioued the front dour
to Walter Ammidon.
He bowed with a little look of sur
prise ami chagrin, fearful lest, now that
his love for Bessie Baldwin had over
leaped it- boundaries, and forced him to
a ss>. >nd attempt to win her love—that
had become more proenms iu proportion
us it seemed nnjMtssessable—fearful lest
his coming, as suggested by her appear
ance, was inopportune and awkward.
But Mi <. Baldwin flushed,and smile.l,
and looked lovely, despite the old blue
veil.
And then he suddenly discovered she
held in her i.aiid the note he lnvd written
her six nr >uth* ago.
She answered his inquiring look as
she conducted him into the parlor.
" I linve oulv this moment r-al your
letter. Oh, Air. Ammidou, what must
yon have thought of me ail this time?"
His face lighted gloriously.
" That you were the sweetest little
darling in all the world, whom I loved
s >. and wanted so, that I came again to- .
day to plead my cause. Bessie, consider
that letter written just now—what would
lx the answer ?"
And she drooped her white eyelids
and half av-rt*d Jn-r sweet, blushing
face, and the answer eame through her
parted lips, so low that only a lover's
ear would have known she said "Yea."

An American's Success.

a severe gale, which caused tlie destruc

Fortunately there were no lives lost.
The trip took five hours, ami was wit

distinguished Italinns. Shortly after
starting, 1 toynton received a blow from
the tail of one of t.he large tisheH which

A Modest Prince.
The Prince of Wales, when he goes
hunting, likes to enjoy himself unosten
tatiously, and doesn't want a fuss made
about him. But when he went to Olou
cesterßhire lately, n member of Parlia
ment and a newly-rich person, .Mr. Pow
ell, appeared to think this all nonsense,
and when the 111 c ting was appointed on
his estate made a great fuss indeed. He
set up a marquee on the lawn for the
prince's luncheon; he prepared his re
ception rooms for the entertainment of
his hunting friends and acquaintances;
he laid in bread and cheese oy tlie ton
weight and strong beer by the hogshead
for the consumption of the country side.
' Consequences: The mob of mechanics
and laborers of tlie in ighlxirhood broke
in, devoured the royal luncheon, and
made the day hideous generally; and af
ter a long day's hunting the prince re
freshed himself with tea and poached
eggs at the nearest clergyman's residence,
not having been seen at all by hie ambi
