A PHYSICIAN S WIFE'S STORY.
" 1 hnvo heard of persona whnac hair

The above remark was made to IV.
Mayunrd, :u> \*e -sit on the piazza of his
pretty v . in dismissing the difforeut cf
of terror on dissimilar tempera

doctor turned to Ins wife and said:
"Helen, will you please relate to my
old friend the incident within your own
e\pene; n>. It the most oou vine tug
'argument I oau advance."
1 looked a? Mrs, Maynarvl itt surprise.
1 had observed that her hair, which waa
luxuriant r.nd dressed very ixxxnuiugly,
was purely colorless ; but, as she was a
young wom.ui, ami also a very pretty
one, I surmised that it was j*ow.h-red to
heighten the brilliancy of her tine dark
eyes.
The d'Vtor aud 1 had been fellow stu

drifted- I to commence practice in an
eastern city, he to pursue Ins profession
in a grow tag town in tlie west. I was
now on a visit to him for the iirst tan.
since his marriage.
Mrs. M \.. .rd, no doubt, reading my
supposition by mv look of incredulity,
smiled ivs s!u< shook h>r snowy tresses
over her shoulders, and, seatiug herself
by her husband's side, related the fol
lowing interesting episode:
"It is nearly two years ago since my
husband w. - called oa one evening t<>

of one of our erving women. Thus I
was left alone. But I felt no fear, for
we never had heard at burglars or any
s -rt of *!t .-neradoes in our quiet village,
then consisting of a few scattering
houses. The windows lea.ling out on
the piazza w* re open as now. but I se
cured the blinds before my husband's
departure, and locked the outside doors,
all except die front one, which I left for
the doctor to look after going out, so
that, if I should fall asleep before his
return, he eould enter without arousing
me. 1 heard the doctor's rapid foot
stop- on tho gravel, quickened by the
nrvent tain of tlie rnesseuger who
awaited him ; and. after the sharp rattle
of ,h. (■ tri i-c wheels had become an
echo, 1 seated myself by the parlor as
tral, and very soon became absorbed in
the book I had been reading before
being disturbed by the summons.
" But after a time my interest succumb
el to drowsiness, and I thought of re
tiring, when the clock in the doctor's
iv ad .lining the parlor struck twelve,
so I determined to wait a few moments
more, fo iing that he would be home
now very s.>u. I closed mv book,
ti >une*l.. n<b'- dr chambrt,, let d ,vn my
hair, and then ret units 1 to mv seat to
run -ltly await and listen. Not th<
faintest sound *listnrbed tlie sti.Lueos of
the night. Not a breath of air stirred
the leaf. The silence was so profomkl
that it became oppr* saive. I lunged for
the sharp click of the gate latch aud the
well knowu step on the grawel walk. I
did not dare to break the hush myself by
mcving or singing. I was so oppressed
with the deep stillness. Tlie human
mind is a strange torturer of itself. I
began to conjure up vivid fancies abont
ghostly visitants, in the mi.lst of which
(- vurml to mc the st< res I had heard
from superstitious people about the
troubled spirits of those who had died
suddenly, like the man whom my ser

closed a thin, cadaverous face, and

Oh, horror.' who was it ?or what was it ?
I felt the cold perspiration start at every
pore. I seemed to be frozen in my chair.
I could
my tongue'seemed glned to the roof of
my mouth, while the deathly white face
] resse i closer, and the great sunken
eyes wand ere-1 in tlieir gaze alx>ut the
room. In a few moments the blind
cloned noiselessly as it had been opened,
and the cautious footsteps caxne toward
the door. ' Merciful heaven!' I cried,
in a horror stricken whisper, as I heard
tho key turn in tlie lock, ' the doctor,
in his haste, must have forgotten to
withdraw the key."
"God forgive me!" ejaculated Dr.
Maynanl, interrupting his wife, and look
ing far more excited than she. " I can
never forgive myself for such a thought
less act. Please proceed, my dear."
" I heard the front door open, the step
in the hall, and helpless as a statue, I
sat riveted to my chair. The parlor
door was open, and in it stood a tall,
thin man, whom I never beheld before,
lie was dressed in a long, loose rolie, a
sort of gaberdine, aDd a black velvet
skull cap partially concealed a broad
forehead, under which gleamed black
eyes, bright as living coals, and placed BO
near together that their gaze was preter
natural in its directness; heavy grizzled
eyebrows hung over them like the tangled
mane of a lion; thenose was sharp and
prominent, and the chin was overgrown
with white hair, which hung down in
lo"ks as weird as the Ancient Mariner's.
He politely doffed his cap, bowed, re
placed it, and then said, in a slightly
foreign nccent:
" ' Madam, it is not necessary for mo
to stand on any further ceremony, as
your husband, Dr. Maynard (hereupon
lie again bowed profoundly), has already
acquainted you with the* nature of my
business here to-night. I i>erceive,' he
added, glancing at my neglige robe, that
you were expecting ine.'
"'No,' 1 found voice to stammer.
'The doctor has said nothing to me
about a visitor at this hour of the night."
" 'Ah ! he wished to spare you, no
doubt, a disagreeable apprehension," he
returned, advancing and taking a seat on
the sofa opposite me, where for a few
moments he sat and eyed me from head
to foot with '! strange glittering light in
his eyes tin:' mysteriously impressed me.
'You have a remarkably fine physique,
madam,' he observed, qnietly; 'one that
might deceive the eye of the most skilled
and practical physician. Do you suffer
much pain ?' ,
" Unable to speak, I shook my head.
A terrible suspicion was creeping over
me. I was alone, miles away from aid
or rescue, with a mailman.
"'Ah!' he continued, reflectively,
'your husband may have mistake an
tumor for a cancer. Allow me to feel
your pulse,' he said, rising and bending
over me.
" I thought it beat to humor him, re
membering it was unwise for a helpless
woman to oppose the as yet harmless
freak of a lunatic. He took out his
watch, shook his head gravely, laid my

A Lobster's Sagacitj.
A hViking in-t.mee of the sagacity iu a
lobster is recorded by Mr. Barker, of tlx*
Rothesay aquarium, in a letter to one of
the Scotch pap. ru. It seems that tiir.s-
were placed in a tank previously
occupie*! by flat fish, and iu which inad"-
verteutly a flounder had Ikx-u left buried
in tin* shingle, where it ditsi. One of
the lobsters, "a veteran" of nnusnnl
size," KUi discovered the dt ad Issly of
the flouuiier, and dragging it from it
resting place, retired with it to a corner
of the tauk. Shortly aftorv urd it was
uoticol that the flounder was missing, ft
was impossible that the lobster could
have eaten it in the water, and the han
dle of a net revealed the fa*-t that ujkui
the approach of the two lesser lobsters
he had buried the flounder lieneath a
heap of shingles on which he now
mounted guard. Five times within two
hours was the flounder unearthed, and as
often did tlie wi y lobster rebury it with
his huge claws, each time ascending the
pile and turning a bold front to bis com
panions. This story shows conclusively
what a vast amount of quenched intelli
• genre may sometimes lie concealed in a
salad.

A Warning.
Opium eaters liad better take warning
rom the experience of Mrs. Sarah A.
Davis, of Boston, lately arrested for
stealing S2BO worth of silverware. The
defense was that she had been for years
addicted to the excessive use of opium;
that this produces epilepsy, which often
results in a loss of moral sense, a de- j
struction of the ability to discern be
tween right and wrong, and a decrease
of will power; that it promotes a ten- 1
dency to deceive anil falsify, and that all ;
these results were apparent in the de- !
feudiuit. Mi dical evidence- was given j
sustaining the deft n .<, and Mrs. Davis ,
was sent to an insane asylum.

V Forty Years' Debt.

Y'. ars after, when on his death Is 1, tins

wrote to Irelaml and lonrm-d that tlic

a daughter, was married and living some
where in America, but he was unable to
ascertain the name of lier husband.
With only tin' name of the lady's father
and the fact that sin- lived somewhere in
America an a clue, Mr. Rafti* commenced
the seemingly hopeless task of searching
for her and redeeming his pledge to his
dying brother. Iy accident he lienrd of
a lady living in I Mibnqae whose family
had borne the miller's name. He visited
her, and after asking her a few ques
tions, learned that the object of his
search was f mnd. Mr. Raftil insisted
on not only paying the original debt,
but forty years' interest.
An Old Soldier.
It will be hard to find a man who has
had a life of more vicissitudes than that
of William A. J. Metllure, who liv s at
the Soldiers' Home in Dayton, Ohio.
He was Isirn in New Jersey, and from
his fifteenth to his thirtieth year was in
the merchant service, visiting almcwt
every port in the world. In 1804 he
turned trapper on the Ohio river, and
finally enlisted in the Americun army,
being captured at Hull's surrender and
taken to Dartmoor prison, but was freed
in time to light at Dundy's Dane, under
General Hrott. He served after ward as
a scout for General Jackson in Florida
and also -erved in the S' mitiole war and
in the American merchant marine.
While as dlor lie wrecked in the
Mediterranean se.i, and was held as a
slnve by the Arabs until purchase d and
released by an American consul. He
was also one of the nine survivors of the
Albion on the coast of In land. He hnH
IM'CII married four times and is tin- father
of twenty-two children. There are said
to lie papers ut Washington which show
that he is one hundred and seven years
old, and that his story of service in the
American army is true.
