TIJE TRAMP LAW.—The tramp law
passed by the recent Legislature and
signed by the Governor among its provis
ions declares that "All persons going
a lout from door to door, or placing them
selves in streets, high ways or other roads
to beg or gather alms, and all other per
son* wandering abroad and begging, who
have no fitted place of residence in the
township, ward or borough in which the
vagrant is arrested, and all persons who
shall come from any place without this
( -tnmon wealth to any place within it and
slini' be found loitering or residing there
in unti b*il follow no labor, trade, otcu
ua'tion or and have no visible

than six hours a day."
SAt Long Branch, the cottage of George
U. Pullman was robbed of diamonds and
jewelry valued at $2,500 on Tuesday even
ing, 18inst. Thieves entered the sleeping
apartment of Mrs. Pullman where the
propcity was kept in a bureau drawer. In
the same drawer there was $3,000 worth of
jewelry which the tbieyes failed to se
cure.
Sail Lake papers say that 10,000 miners
have left Utah this season to assist in the

Portage, Pa. July 21.—Mi*s Sarah
Goodloe, aged nineteen years, daughter of
a b a ling citixen of thi- place, was bitten
by a rattlesnake while picking berries on
Wycknff Mountain, a mile and a half from
hcm>-, and being uuaklu to reach borne
died a frightful death in the wood*. She
was accompanied by two little girls, one
of whom hastened to the village with the
new-, and two physicians repaired to the
*1 tC- soon as pos-ible, only to find her in
the agonies of death. The little girls had
succeeded in g.-tttng her half a nnin on
the way home, when she could go no
further.
Tho snake had bitten her twice in the
calf of the right leg, and one of its iar.gs
was found hanging to her stocking.:

ly turning black. The leg had swollen *o.
that the skin had parted in several places.

surviving child of her father, whose wife

dred; some may seek for like sacrifice*
amid the annals of the Scottish Chief* or
Polish Patriots. But it is only when we
turn to the thrilling chapters of our old
Border history that wo read and re-read,
in intensified form, the bloody story ol
Rose Bud and Big Horn Rivers. Custer
and his three hundred, ambushed by a
wily foe and melting uwav in deHtli before
odds rendered doubly and terribly formid
able by bewildering shrieks and stealthy
mode of lighting, recall with vivid effect
the tragedy of Bruddock's Field, whose
details are so graphically and fully narra
ted in that |fo:i'ierful book, "Our West
