l'ort betternian, July 15. —Three cour
iers, James Bell, William Evans and;
Benjamin Steward, privates of the Sev-j
enth infantry, arrived jn tins campthi*,
morning from General IY-r,y'g eaiun, on
the Yellow-tone, near the mouth ot ttiet
Big llorn river. They started on the
s th and made tlie most daring ride on
record, through the stronghold of the
-inux, in three nights and two days.
A reconnuitcring party of thirty per-!
sons under the command of Second!
Lieutenant Frederick W.Eibley, Cf the
second cavalry, was sent from this camp!
on July 0. They were to observe the!
movements ami position of the Sioux,
a:.-l if possible tin whereabouts of Ter
ry. On the Oth they returned on {<K>t
aftt r a Urril.dc retreat of two nights and
one day.
The handful of men left our c 'mp it:
broad daylight, with a Strang,- alwdtce!
of precaution, it being usual to •lisgsii-..-
stich movements under the shelh r of
darkness. Tiny marched all night <d ;
the oth, toward the sources of the Little-
Big llorn. tut t'"- 7th, after a -light i
meal, which afterward satgd them from
perishing, they pursued their toursg!
throt:gh sono- loot hills verging toward!
the mountains. At about half past four:
a large body of Sioux wan espied from
the top of the bluff, marching eastward..
They seemed to spread all over the
plain and evidently were moving to at
tack'the camp on Goose Creak. Lieu-j
tenant .Sibley's parly remained conceal-'
ed and in horrible anxiety for an hour!
watching their movements. Soon a tre
mendous shout warned them that tin
trail they seemed to be looking for was
found. (Quickly hundreds of savages
were crowded upon it and set out upon
the chase at a full canter, uttering those
terrible wolfish cries peculiar to the
Sioux and Cheyenne*. The scouting
party mounted and galloped toward the
mountains, the Sioux yelling as they
caught a glimpse of them like hounds on
the scent. They seemed to be distanced
iti the race, but had broken into two
bodies and were making a double cir
cuit to gain the high points which they
knew the pursued must pass. The scout
ing party climbed the rhlgetuul were ap
proaching shelter about noon, trotting
quietly through a ravine, when sudden
ly a volley of fifty shots was poured front
the surrounding rocky slopes, where the
savages were massed, while as many
more of tlieiu charged down ujon them
like fury. Every man of lite little party
felt despair chilling him. They w heeled
and galloped for the timber in the val
ley, followed by a volley. Before they
reached shelter three horses were wound
ed.
They dismounts of) a knoll covered
by a grove, and could sen thp enemy
swarming on the foot hills below, while
constant reinforcements gained the
higher points around them. A plunging
fire tore the foliage from the pines, and
as their numbers thickened the roar of
the volleys was perfectly deafening,
