The democratic county convention rc assembled, on last Tuesday, in the court house, and elected Dr. Dobbin* and Dr. Tlillhish representative delegates to the state convention, and Satu'l Swart*, by acclamation as senatorial delegate, sub ject to the decision of the conferee*. As senatorial conferees. Fergus Potter, A\ A. Tobias and C. M. Bower were chosen by acclamation. A reeolntion was passed in far or of A. t*. CMrtin as the democratic nomine* for vice president. The number of delegates present wa 25, mostly from Bellefonte, Spring, i Roggs and a few other districts in thi t wool ion. No delegates from (.regg, Penn. Haines and Miles. CURTIX FOR VICE PREXIORXT The democratic convention on Tues day passed a resolution in favor of A. < On rtin for Vice President. Only about one-third of the delegates acre preaent, but had there been a full convention, the expression would have been the same. iiov. Curtin has been in full sym pathy with the democratic party aime his return from Russia, and has voted the democratic ticket from that day to this, and has been an earnest advocate of the principles of our party. We could moat cordially support him on the ticket with some eminent demo crat for Preeident. Hendricks and Fur tin if the ticket that already finds favvr in many parts, and it would l>c a strong on-.*. We would be proud to have the next vice president hail front Centre county. Washington, February HI —At noon ' to-day the President signed the Centen nial bill with a pen made from the quill of an American eagle. Might just as well add that saixl eagle was born in 177t>, on the -tth of July, is still alive, and will crow at the opening of the Centennial. The Lewisburg Chronicle asks w hat there is that some fellows in Centre county want to investigate about our railroad by a committee to be ap|K>inted by an act of the legislature. We an -wer the Chronicle by saying that there i- nothing at all for such a committee to investigate—it is only a little £icce of political humbug, by a few fellows that want an office next fall, and knowing the deep concern that we of Dmnsval ley have for the completion of the road, th. se fellows think they can gull our people by a bogus show of friendship for the road, and that our people will tiius beguiled into supporting them for me nomination next fall. The stock holders can "investigate" any time they se fit, the law gives them that right. AVe all know that there has been much d-.-lay in pushing forward the road—that needs no investigation ; we all know that our money has been spent in grad ing between Harris township and the Union connty line, —that needs no in vestigation ; we all know that the Pres ident of the company gels a good salary, and more than he should have for the amount of service he has to render as long as our road is unfinished, aud that needs no investigation, but instead let ns stockholders at the next annual meet ing use our votes in favor of cutting down that salary and save money, which will be better than to tpend money on a ouimittee of office seekers who want to investigate something we already do know. This sham investigation is only calculated to further delay the road, and is gotten up by fellow s w ho are opposed to a read in Pennsvallev. The time is approaching when men will be looking out for office. There is nothing wrong in honest ambition and in seeking to obtain places of honor, when the applicant is honest, capable and will make a faithful public servant, and does not seek place for the sake of plunder. But, it is notorious, that a ma jority of the place seekers now are haw ks after prey. The people should keep their eyes upon the crows and buzzards and settle their preferences upon clean birds. There are still honest, capable and deserving men left, but politics has been so much polluted by the corrupt office-seeker, that the best material ot ten stands aloof, leaving a free field to the trickster and his dark ways. If the people would take a deeper interest in the primary elections and support none but men of known integrity for offices and delegates to tlie conventions, the evil of having unfit men nominated, would not be near so great as we now often behold it. It is, after all, in the hands of the people, and the primaries is tlie place jrhere they can directly bring their power to bear for good or against bad men for offices. They do some things in England which might be copied with good effect in this country. If men who hold offi ces in America were held to as strict an accountability as the following item shows is the rule in England, congress and our state legislatures would soon be left without a quorum. A London tele gram of 16, says: Mr. Robert Henry Hurst, Liberal, wlio wa3 elected member of the House of Commons in December last for IIor shaa, Sussex, has been unseated, in consequence of sending letters to the voters promising to pay their railway expenses to the polling-place. Justice Qaanj, of the Court of Queen's Bench, declared that this was bribery, and that the election was therefore void. Wonderful to tell —but 'tis true, Har ris is now a democratic township. By the list of officers published in our local columns, it will be seen that the demo crats elected their ticket by a handsome vote. We welcome Harris into the gaN axy of democratic townships of Penns valley. May she remain long in the faith and keep dyed in the wool. Landis who was lately tried for shoot ing editor Carruth, of Vineland, N. J., was acquitted by the jury on the plea of insanity. That was the most sensible jury we have yet heard of—no one but a crazy man or a fool would shoot or in any manner abuse an editor. The Williamsport Sun and the Bulle tin have each staked a hundred dollars upon the matter of circulation—each daiming the larger circulation in that .ounty. General McDonald, the late Super vis or of Imcrna! Kevenne in St. Louis, who is among the convicted number-, of the 1 whiskey ring there, is reported to ha\e } said that f250,000 of the money secured . by that ring was contributed to the Re j publican national campaign fund. Ii j connection with this assertion the fol lowing queries which Colonel William M. Grosvenor pukes in the Public are i interesting: s General Babeock knew that Charles j W. Ford and John McDonald had been personal friends of the President befon • the war. Mr. Ford was made Collector ? because he had tuauaged General Grant's , private affairs with great success. Gt-n --[ eral McDonald was made Su|iervior he muse the President liked him and trust ed him completely. Thesetwoand Colo- nel Joyce, an intimate friend of Bab ■> cock, were at the headofthe President's , faction in Missouri, and when that fic tion was beaten, in 1870, the Republican 1 party having been divided, these men • went to work to re-unite it. By means y which General Babeock mav or mtv not t have known at the time, they induced Mr. McKee to change the course of the ' I>emo.-rat and return to the support of > the President. By like means they . brought about a nominal re-union of the ( Iarty, and sustained a vigoious cam paign in the St. Louis citv election in ■ 1871, and captured the delegation from that State for Grant in 1872. When the ■ Democrat passed from Mr. McKee'- hands the confederates found means to establish the Globe as Grant's organ. They contrived to make up a private ■ subscription of $17,000 to be used in that , Mate, not for the Republican State tick et, hut for the Grant electoral ticket, as Henry T. Blow, if alive, could testify. I ■ it presumable that these men. personally intimate with the President and Gener al Babeock, failed to mention facts so well calculated to give them influence at the White House? When did President Grant first sus pect that there had been frauds in St Louis? Did the infamous fact that his trusted friends had been robbing thi Government first dawn upon bin mind when Secretary Bristow submitted con clusive pfoof of it? When sworn state ments, making a full exposure, wer. sent by mail, one copy to the President and one to General Babeock, did neith ■ er reach him ? When the order trans ferring supervisors was revoked, at tin request of a supervisor who bad been publicly accused, did Grant suspect uotli ing? Did Mr. Ford, in bis last confi dential interview with the President at Toledo, only a day or two before his death, give no reason for bis anxiety t< leave the office "of Collector? Cannot the President find, if lie tries, one letter written to him by Mr. Fowl, solemnly warning him that McDonald would get him into trouble by the methods he was using? From all accounts Ford sup posed to the end that the illegal distilla tion was permitted only fo raise money for political purposes. There is not th"< least proof that be ever took money him self ; lie died in office, unsuspected am jioor. If he, the confidential friend o; the President, supposed that this was a customary method of raising money for party purposes, is it conceivable that In never talked about it to the President'. But if he did talk of it, if he did w .iri the President that McDonald's opera tions were getting dangerous, if he did beg to get out of bis office because things were done over his bead, professedly for party purposes, which lie did no quite like, when did the President first suspect that the Government had been robbed to aid his renomination and rc electlou ?
