The ropubl.carts of Centre county
were sent up salt river higher than ever
before—they have been driven right into
the swamps, and are now feasting on lit
zards and sich. Dan. Hastings made ap
plication to be ring master, but he can't
get Woodring's steed to ride on. and a let
ter jut received from ye salt, says that he
did not let such a trifle dampen his ardor,
but has mounled s slick pony, and keeps
singing out, "tit off of the track there."
Poor Dan. who'd a-thought that a little
promotion at ibe Centre county fair would
set bim crazy?
On Thursday night of the 21, thieves
entered the store of McCiain & Cook, in
Milesburg, and stole about 57500 worth
of boots, shoes, neckties, collars, under
wear, and otbar similar articles. They ef
fected an entrance from the outside inlc
the wareroom, and with a chisel cut a bole
through the doofoeadtng to the storeroom,
and, turning the dead latch, walked in
and halped themselves. Alter supplying
themselves with what they wanted, they
went to the residence of Esquire Uaupt,
in Central City, and stole a number of ar
ticles, amoug them bis best suit of
clothes.— Republican.
A sneak thief entered the hall of
Col W. P. Wilson's residence, on Satur
day evening, 23, and stole therefrom the
Colonel's overcoat. The thief learned that
it don't pay to steal from a lawyer. He
was in jail half an hour after he commit
ted the theft.— Republican.
At Terre Haute last week, James Mar
tin got into an altercation with his brother
in-law. John Seader. who stabbed bim fa
tally. Ilis father-in-Uw and mother-in
law chased the wounded man with shot
guns and killed him near his mother's
house. The father-in-law shot his own
son last winter, and his wile's fir.t husban 1
killed her father.
