Mountain fire* are raging in all *co
lions of our county, and much valuable
limber is being destroyed thereby. These
fire* are a common thing from spring to
summer, every year, and 11 is only the
rain* that stop them. Villainous persons
are the causes of ibis wanton destruction

ance in several parts of Maryland, and has

TUF. GRASSHOPPER PLAGUE.
St Paul, Minn., May 21.—The pioneer
Press publishes de-patches from anutnber
uf localities in all parts of the Suto rela
tive to the grasshopper*. The purport is
that there is no grat-hopper* in the dis
trict devastated by them last year, nor in
any part of Minnesota, north, south, east
or west, except in a very small area and in
comparatively small number*, confined to
:h group of counties an the Great Bend
of the Minnesota River.
THE SITUATION IN THE MINING
REGION.
Mauch Chunk, May 1M —The miners at
Summit Hill are reportc-1 as going to work
tu x; Monday, but the conditions have not
uccu made public. Tin- mines are owned
by the Lebigli ai d wilkeabarre coal com
pany. By the lit of June a genera! re
sumption is anticipated to Uke place, at
least in the Lehigh region, and will bo un
der a reduction of the 1874 basis.
The miners seem ready to resume as a
general thing, and all aay they are heartily
, tired f the long strike.
ATTEMPT OF MRS LINCOLN TO
COMMIT SUICIDE.
j Chicago, May 10. —The Times ba* itsfor-1
t lualion that Mrs. Lincoln to-day attempt
ed to commit suicide by poisoning, alter
being removed from the court room where
she was adjudged i usance yesterday. She
was put under strict turveilianre, it being
feared that *he might do injury to herself.
Tc-day, she escaped from her room and
hurried to the drug store 01 Frank Square
and under the Grnnd Pacific Hotel, sheer
dcred a compound of camphor and laud
anum ostensibly for neuralgia. The clerk
informed l.er it would tako about ten min
utes to make it, whereupon she took a car
r age and drove to two other drug stores.
She was followed by Mr. Squares, who, In
each esse prevented the druggists from
giving her the compound. She finally re
turn id lo the first place and procured a
mixture which she supposed was what she
wanted, but which was harmless She
drank this as she left the store. As it had
no effect, she tried to leave her room again
to obtain a larger but was prevented.
She was removed to n private hospital at
Batavia. Ills , this afternoon, where she
will have (.very attention.
