AN EARTH URAUK IN NEVADA
SKKtors SPLIT IN THE FORMA
TION.
Gold Hi li.Ngr.tda New
About throe minutes*' walk in an easter
ly direction from Main street. Gold Hill,
there is to be seen a wonderful phenom
enon. The ground, either from an earth
quake or acme other cause, has recently
split open tar at least a quarter eta mile
The crevice thus created, starting at I< t
Homestead, crosses the railroad track and
thence pursues a nearly southerly direc
tion down the west side ef the canyon
embraced between Fort Homestead and
the hill beyond It then crosses the can- i
von and extend* for a considerable dis- j
lance up the side of the hill last named.
The crevice varies in width frem one to
twenty inches, and in place: appears to be 1
bottomless The most interesting locality
to visit first is directly east of Foetmaster
Chulbuck * residence. In going to the lo
cality indicated it is necessary for tbo lit- '
it or to cross the canyon named above.
The crevice or chasm throughout its en
tire extent it a-straight as en arrow, and
is of recent origin. It was fir-t discovered
by our fellow townsman Mr. Fleming, an
old prospector. That it is something
mere than a landslide is evident from the
fact that it crosses the canyon in a
direction nearly at right angles to the
same. Our reporter, who visited the
scene of the earth opening, lost all trace
of the same at the fort. It is possible,
however, that it extends northerly us far
as the Imperial works The ground upon
which '.be town of Gold Hill is built seems
to possess the element of instability, and
in many case* the water pipe* have pulled
apart and the boiler beds have got out ef
position owing to this circumstance. The
I question, "whither are we drifting is a
pertiment one. Any person possessed of
ordinary cqjiosity, <>r laving a taste for
geological investigations, will be richly
rewarded by visiting the scene of the
phenomenon refcrretf to above.

A SALOON KEEPERS DEATH
CAUSED BY A VISIT FROM A
PRAYING BAND.
[From the Boston Advertiser.]
On Saturday the lad ice called upon one
of the principal saloons, the proprietor,
Mr. L. Simpson, having refused to see the
gentlemen, and wore received very polite
ly. He was asked it he thought it right to
sell liquors, and responded, "Yes, as right
as for grocers to sell groceries
One of the ladies then read several pas
sages from the Bible, remarking, "Let us
see what the lord saya." On bearing the
a-ripture. relating :• the anger of t he
Lord with drunkards and tao- who sell
liquer the proprietor turned pale, trembled
violently, and clutched the counter con

gers in the saloon were slupified, and only
offered asMsUnc* when urged by the la
dies. On being led into an other room he
cried several times. "Oh God! have mercy
on my sou!!'' Immediately his tongue
began swelling, tilling his mouth to such
an extent as to render it impossible to ar
ticulate.
The ladies did ail in their power to ren
der him comfortable, and a physician was
called for, who on ariving pronounced it a
case of anoplexy and in a short lime the
man died. The community was of course
stunned with the news, and the feeling for
Mr. ISimpson is intense. The ladies all
agreed that it wa the direct work oflhej
Lord, and even sonic of the frequenters of,
the saloon acquiesced in this decision.
