It is hoped that every school in the county

most successful Sunday school convention
yet held in Centre county. Practical sub
jects in which all are interested, will be
thoroughly discussed in sermons and ad
dresses.

DEMOCRATIC CO. CONVENTION
A meeting of the Democratic Co. Con
vention was held at Bellefonte, on 29th
ult Msj. K. H. Forster, chairman of the
Dent. Co. Committee, stated the object of
the meeting, namely : To elect a delegate
to the stale ccnvention, and three senato
rial conferees.
The rffll being called, the following gen

resent their respective townships and dis

gate to the state convention.

Weber were elected at senatorial confer
ees with instructions to vote for Capt Jno
A. Hunter for senatorial delegate.
Mr. John Hoffer offered the following,

ber of the General Assembly of Pennsyl
vania, which nomination was ratified at
the polls by a large majority of the voters

records of the Legislature now abundant
ly testify that he was well worthy of the
confidence thus reposed in bim by this
convention and a majority of his fellow
citizens; therefore,

H. Orvis, as a member of the Assembly,
meets with our entire and hearty approba
tion ; that far the ability, industry any fi
delity with which be served the interests
of his constituent*; for hi* firm and un
swerving apposition to all private or spe
cial legislation designed to benefit the few
at the cost of the many ; for his determined
and unyielding stand against ail legisla
tive corruption, and all manner of disrep
utable combinations for improper legisla
tive purposes ; and for his able and unan
swerable exposition of the wrong* and out
rages by and through which an unscrupu
lous and profligate "Treasuiy Ring' have
been for year* past plundering the people
of the slate, be deserves, and we hereby
tender him, our sincere and heartfelt
thanks, and the expression of oar eontin
ued confidence in, and respect for, hit
high character as a legislator, a faithful
public servant, and an honored citizen of
our county.
The convention then adjourned.

It will be observed that Bellefonte has
gained 2, Ferguson, Walker and Boggt>
one each. According to the adopted rule,
under which this apportionment is made,
Potter is entitled to 8, a gain of one, hav
ing come in with one of the largest frac
tious; whether this was an oversight, or
designedly which we trust not, we do not
know, yet to that number is Potter enti
tled under the rule governing the party.

well known to a number of our readera,
almost lost hU life on last Saturday by
drowning. Mr. Hall it appears was en bis
way|homc front thi* place and attempted
to cross a narrow foot log over the Canal
near Shortlidge A Go's Lime Kiln and by
some means made a misstep and was pre
cipitated into the waters beneath ;
but was fortunately rescued (when life
was almost extinct) by several of Mesare.
Shortlidge A Co s workmen who were
near by, at the time, this almost fatal ac

—A GTOJTXTIC SFKCCLXTIOK. —A heavy
sale of coal and timber land* was closed
two week* ago between Robert Oeborn,
A. F. Haunt* Jno Carrier and Nathen Car
rier, all of Brookville. to Col Wm. Phil
ip*, President of the Allegheny Valley
Railroad, who purchased from the party
name 1, about 2,100 seres and the half in
terest in !00 acres, for the sum of three
hundred thousand six hundred and seven
ty-five dollars, being over $126 per acre.
Theso lands lie in Brady and Huston
townships, on Sandy Lick creek, along
the line of the Low Grade Railroad,
where Fall* Creek empties into Sandy.
To our tuind, this settle* the question a* to
where the shops of the Allegheny Valley
Railroad will be located, and fixe* the
junction of (the Buffalo road with the Low
Grade road at the mouth of Falls Creek.
The pine tree* in that section are lew than
200 feet high and the coal vein not over 20
feet thick. It is, without doubt, one of
the grandest speculation* that ever occur

—The funeral of H. N. McAllister
will take place at Bellsfonte on Thurs
day, Bth, (today).
—The people of Meiles tp. were at
Bellefonte Monday, almost en masse,
attending court as witnesses in several
suits from that section.

fully musical whenever he enters with

—The Reporter has the following
items from the lower end :
On Saturday and Sunday last Mill
beim was in a state of riot. An employee
of the Vandykes, in Union county,
and some half a dozen of Howlev'a
men had a regular shilialah fight, be
tween 4 and 6 P. M., of Saturday. Iu
this encounter "Tom" Hare (Van
dyke's employee) came off second best,
and from what we can learn, would
have lost his life had not some of the
citizens interlered. In the evening* sf
ler Tom's wounds had been dressed an
other inelee took place in Kremer's
bar-room, Hare receiving a cut near
the eve and tyro of bis enemies being
knocked down. In this encounter a
portion of the stove was upset, which
roused the proprietor of the Hotel,
and he ordered the pugilists ontof the
house. This, so far is we eta latra,
closed Saturday's work.
On Sunday, between 10 ami 11 A.

Mr Charles Fryer, the laat Soldier
of the War of 1812, in IVuu township.,
died on lat Tuesday, after a protract
ed illness. Mr. F. has been a residentj
of lVnu township for more than fifty 1

in indigent circumstances, being in a
measure dependant upon the Foot '
Oyerseers, whose aid, in connection
with his Pension, afforded him a liveli- .
hood. He was buried in the Heform
ed Cemetery at Aaronsburg.last week
and was about fW years old.
DEATH OF H. N. MfALLISTKK.
H. N. M'Allister, one oflhe oldest
and iuoat prominent member* of the
Centre county bar, died at Philadel
phia. on Monday morning last, at fi
o'clock, of pleurisy. Hi* health was
bad for over a year, and hi* untiring
labor* a* a member of the Conatitu
tional Convention, was all the worse
for hi* failiug constitution. Hi* loss
will be deeply fell in that importaut
body and deeply regrettbd throughout
the state, He was one the ablest,
mot industrious aud upright member
of the Couveulion, and a* chairman
of the very importaut committee on
Suffrage, he ha* been the advocate,
and father of propositions which look
ed solely to the purity of the elective
system, and to prevent the practice of
fraud* upon the ballot-box aud the
violation of the election laws by un
scrupulous politician* —and so unti
ringly did he devote himsell to this
work of reform, that he broke dowu
under his labors, and death was the
penalty for overwork in his endeavors
to engraft wholesome features upou
the fundamental law of our common
wealth.
Mr. M'AllisUr was oue of the most
public spirited men of out county, and
he will be missed in that respect. He
was an able as well as an upright at
torney —here, too, his loss will be felt
He was the maiuspring of the Centre
Co. Agricultural Society, and its pio
neer as well as it* pilot —hi* loss will
be greatly felt there. He was the most
active and unselfish friend of the Agi.l
College of I'enn'a, devoting valuable
time and money to place that institu
tion upou a successful fooling, and all
he did was gratuitous, aud with a view
to the general good. Every enter
prist that was calculated to further
the interests of llellefonte and of Cen
tre county, found in Mr. M'Allister
au advocate- He was an active mem
ber of the Pryibyterian church, aud
liberal in the support of benevolent
institutions. He leaves a widow and
two married daughter* to mouru his
loss.

rior polish. The ground has been leased.
