tirlaint traukupino . T wig cATI^LIC PLAGIVE, The Comm Widener* appointed by the Governor of New York, under an act of the Legislature; passed In IRK for the prevention of vinderpest and other Infectious diseases, have made a re port communicating facts respecting the Texas cattle plague, Ito history and the circumstances attending Its mmti lest Atlon. On the point how the disca , e is communicated, the Com- inissioners state that they have not heard of a single case of the disease having been taken by any animal that line not been In contact with Texas cattle or with their excretions. They have had authentic evidence that Tex • as cattle that have passed over a road dropping their excrements, have com municated the disease to native (tattle —that passed over the same road forty eigh‘houre afterwards. The disease Is aggravated by motion and ameliorated by fresh air and re pose. Wherever cattle have exhibited The earliest symptoms of the disease, and have been taken from the cars and allowed suitable tood and drink, with rest and fresh air, they lutes Invaria bly recovered speedily; while those which have exhibited the saute symp toms, and have gone forward in the cars from sixty to one hundred miles further, have rapidly developed the disease in Its most malignant form. The first symptom of the disease k an appearance of languor and weari ness, tt bleb is unmistakable; the head drops, the ears hang down, the eyes are staring ; the back is arched, strong efforts are made to dung, which are often Ineffectual, the droppings being usually dry, scanty, and atained with blood. The urine Is generally dark batten in color, and commonly called "black water." The coat is generally rough, the hairs standing almoaterect ; the horns are hot, the nose dry, a frothy saliva flows from the mouth; ales set tle in great numbers, and the &Dimsl rarely makes an effort to brush them off. The meat of diseased animals may entity be recognised. The fat has a deep or high-colored greenish-yellow appearance, and has not the firm re sistance of health. The lean meat is of a brownish mahogany color, and on being cut Into ham a peculiar sickening odor. Sometimes the superficial mus cle have the natural pink read tint, but the deep-seated muscles, and e,pecially the lutereostal muscles (those between the ribs,) have the dark brown color end nauseous smell. The remedy suggested for the cattle disease la carbolic acid, which,it is as aerted, is an absolute and perfect disin fectant. All farmers and drovers who have reason to suspect that their cattle have been exposed to the Infection are advised to sprinkle the substance known as "heavy oil" abundantly about the yards where they are con fined, and to put some carbolic acid into the water they drink, in the pro portion of one part pure acid with thrice rtu own weight of salsoda, to one thousand parts of water. The Commissioners state that the disease is not necessarily fatal, several severe eases under their immediate observation having recovered under the treatment above recommended. The Lady's Friend, for October. A fine Steel Plate, "The River Spirit," a brilliant Fashion-PlateT- and a spirit ed wood-cut of a group of young peo ple amusing themselves with Hallow e'en rites, are the leading embellish ments of the October number of this beautiful monthly. In literary merit It is decidedly at the head of maga zines of Re class. "Fleeing from Fate," by Louisa Chandler Moulton, Is a striking story, worth any one's while to read; "Master Cessimer," from the (lertnan, has the novelty of foreign _customs; "Aunt Paget's Pitcher," by August Bell, Is a quaint conceit, the genuine by-play of genius; "The De harry Fortune," by Amanda M. Doug las, grows In interest with every num ber; and the Poems by Floredoe Percy - and Beatrice Colonna are melt as one does not often meet with in a lady's magazine. At the same time; In taste ful patterns of the Fashions, and Work-table outs and directions, It Is especially suited for ladles of refine -meat and culture. The new music In tills number is a ballad—" Fancy Brings Thee O'er the Lea." The Pros pectus for the next year contains un equalled inducements to new subscri bers, and we advise our readers tosend for a specimen number (which is fur nished gratis), and avail themselves of the Publishkrs' munificent, offers. It is published by Deacon & Peterson .ffin Walnut street, Philadelphia, at 3 2 . , 50 year (which also includes a large steel engraving). "The Lady's Friend" and "The Saturday Evening Poet," 54.00. THE public debt has been Increased mote than FORTY-TWO ]ZILLIONS of dollars in twelve months. Can this be ciphered away In a Radical 'cam paign document?" asks the Age. Will tax-payers believe the false state ments of interested partisans, rather than the official annotmeement of the Secretary of the Treasury ? They can verify the latter as they would any fact in relation to their own business, and the constant demands for money in the shape of taxation prove that the government is being run at a most ru inous rate of expenditure. • The cost of the War Department alone, in 1848, will be greater than the whole expen ses of the nation under Democratic rule. Nor is there any sign of the stream of expenditures becoming less while the Radicals are in power. They rule by force and money. There are thousands of needy adventurers quartered on that party who must be provided for. If the expenses are tobe reduced, the Radicals must be driven from power. Business and working. men should set wisely In the pending contest. A CARPII , 3/10 SINALTO2 from Ala bama went to draw his allowance of stationary, &a.
