MI -ganuitt s _antr tonistkuping artzer OTPCh-TTLE ON THE FENTII. ITT OW TIM PAWL There b apparent discrepancy in I the teachings of even Judicious writ ; tern on topics of importance, which Is L calculated lb confuse the Inexper -I°lendea. Discussion Is necessary, to recOttelle the inconsistency and to 1 - bring the truth clearly out• One of these topics Is the effect of stock keeping on the fertlity of the harm, and our remark is suggested , li) , the following from sources alike entitled-to respect. One writer says: / "On an educky day I fell Into the error of increasing my stock of cattle from a sufficient number to afford me plenty of milk, butter and fresh beef, to a much larger number, since which time my lands have been much In jured in consequence of the constant trampling by the cattle, and their con ' gumption of almost every living green thing where they were. suffered to pasture. The little space manured by them has been at the expense of hun dreds of acres." On the other hand we have the fol. /owing : "There is no way to keep up a farm so readily or so well as by keep. tog all the - stock it will fairly carry, in order to produce the largest possi ble quantity of good manure. Some thing may be dono with artificial ma nures to be sure, but they are to be eon - sidered rather as stimulants to the Im niediate crops than as means of keel ing up the permanent fertility of the soil and condition of the land. We ilo not , mean by this to recommend a farmer tn keep more than his farm will carry well, but to keep as much, and if he has tonttppletnent a little—that Is to buy more or less grain or hay to help out a rather short crop—he had better do this than to sell his hay for leant of etoek enough to consume 4t. in other words, it is better to sell the produce of the farm on four loge than to cell ft In the form of hay and grain, unless he hes eome other and extraor d nit . T . • . Y means of supplying a full equiv alent in the form of fertilizers, that wilt keep up the Nondition of the land " Now, lif*+Never apparently contra- letory,tlAse views are equally correct. Nothing could be more unwise than the heavy stocking spoken of by the tirld-writer. On ordinary grain aed tobacco farm!' there is no true provi: slim made for cattle. Large surfaces are cultivated, and the chief deiren deuce, necessarily, for keeping up their fertility, is cloworhuch natur al growth as Succeeds the cultivated crops. There is no time allowed fur a turf to thicken up between the crops Thore is no sod to 'receive the heavy trend of cattle. If these are turned on them in numbers sufficient to !ma- NUllle the summer growth and 'to - feet l ap the winter stores of straw and corn fodder, the surface is torn to pieces by the irhoofe, the surface-covering, so con servative—OTTertilicy, scattered to the winds, and there is no recompense, afters'', but poor cattle, the moot un protitable of crops. The universal ex- Terrence, therefore, under such a state of things is, rapid Impoverishment of the land and very poor returns from the stoek•raising. It was the observa tion of such results which suggested the systerd of the distinguished agri cultural Writer, John Taylor, of Caro line county, Virginia, known as the "enclosing system." Under It, after the clop of grain was removed, the held w as to by rigidly shut up for two yeafii, and the whole religiously de voted to the improvement of the land. Not a hoot was allowed to trespass on These inelosures, held sacred to the fertilizatiun of the soil. It may be well to say in passing, however, that this system was found to be less sue --_!essful in practice than on first thought awe shoujii expect it to be. When elover culture came into prac tice, It was found that a degree of ;razing was rather profitable than itherwise to the laud. A good growth if clover, consu:ned partially and trod 'len close - to the surface, best served he purpose of fertilizing, while it fed sell the comparatively small 14' nc k which a grain farm should have. Un ler- very favorable cireumstan.2 s pretty close grazing- o, clover would not seriously interfere with the mproveinent of the land, the roots in hat case still yielding enough of ferti 'icing matter. But generally, and for nary soils, the least possible amount grazing should be allowed, unless 'peinal preparation be made for It. ' tht n farm devoted to grain and to ',aeeo, this extra provision should eon 'ist of au outliving, standing pasture, , o - he improved by lime, plaster, or othe - r means at command. No ,eeeei of stock to the cultivated fields liottld be at any time allowed, except chat is necessary to tread down the ;rowth, of whatsoever kind, that it pay perish in contact with the ground, i nstead of wasting In the air. In such ,ass, agood clover fieldrthe main pur- IDSP of which is to enrich the arable Melds, will afford a very serviceable , ddition to the grazing at certain per and for a limited time. The _taiting pasture may be stocked to ,ts fall capacity, and the straw, corn &c., may be profitably con iumed in winter, and corn, to any necessary extent, in making good beef i rid mutton. In Great Briton we know this is com monly the case, and the Journal above quoted, says, that good farmers of the Connecticut valley find it for their interest to buy a large amount of stock In the - fall, and to buy grain from the West at high prices, to feed out for the sake of the manure. They may lose on the stock, but look to the crops they may produce front the manure, to make up any loss sustained on the stock, and having tried It year after year, they do not look In vain. They have learned to put confidence In ma• nure, and every farmer who expects to prosper must learn the same lesson. Manure Is the basis of the farmer's prosperity and stock is the source' of manure.—Amer. Farmer. FEEDING HOINE4.—The Arabs, the most careful of their horses of all peo ple, do meet of their horse feeding at night. Tile) , say that feeding in the day time does not impart so much vig or and elasticity to the animal as night mastication does. Their saying is that "barley in the night goes to the but tock—ln the morning to the manure." They afford water, very sparingly du ring the day time. Tom &TOES FOR WINTERIJBE.-After ekinulug perfectly ripe tomatoes,• cut out any green around the base. I think leaving in this bard green core Is the amediate cause of the loss of the fruit. Place them in a bell-metal ket tle over the fire ; then only allow them to come to a boll; while hot, put in stone cans or small mouthed gallon Jars, cork and seal. If proper judg ment be exercised you will never lose one Jar. FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF GETTYSBURG.
