fthitsburi onloiltr 77tIDAY; APIIIL 94, rasa. COMMON . . rAwaisb In the opinion of most men farming has been conducted from time m metoor. tal with too little regard to the teachings of common sense. Iu out times it watt the custom for tons to take hold of the lame, and manage them Just as their father did, without Inquiring whether this was the best way. They put In the crops •et the same time, in the saute month, and cultivated them In the same way, and got Just about the same returns. Whereas, If they bad exercised a little common sense, they might have had some other crop that would' have been far morel profitable, or a much more abundant - yield of the same. They did net reason about the matter, but fol. lowed a track which bail been beaten before them. Farmers at the present day, especially what may be called fancy farmers, have gone to the other extreme. With them the cardinal virtue has been to disregard the past, to strike out some entirely new course, to do all their farming on some praeLteular theory to whieh everything mast be made to conform. If they have not taken to raising hobby-honer, they have taken to riding hobbles, until many a one has been ridden to death. Every farmer ought to be a reading and thinking man, looking into what is 'new, to see what value there may be in it; but farming is eminently a practi cal business, to be oonducted not so much on theory as on experience. A theory may be very splendid, but if it does not work well, it Is worth 'nothing at An Inventor of some fertilizing mateiial, for instanoe,-may make It es clear as ttte sun, on paper, that it contains all that is requisite to Insure au abundance of till or - that particular crop; but if it does not cause the crop to grow, if it proves a fail ure when it comes to be applied to the soil, it will not be worth nay more-to the farmer than a recipe for maktia_numn , sh Me alit of eaeumberi. . The great thing for each and every man to do, after getting an the nines _pont and Information that he can, from others and from books, is to exrcise his own common sense" in cultivating his grounda. Let him not be gol, erned by any mere theory, or by any iron rule o f .the past, but by the nature of his soil the situation of his farm, the circum stances bf his family, and a variety of considerations which cannot here be named; but especially by his own obser vation and experience upon his own farm. - Experience is the result of ex peri moot, and this should not always be con ducted In one direction; but common sense Should be the judge to which all questionii should be lett for decision. now So liallos Early l'Onudoso mod Lima Tomatoftrean be raised ten days earlier than usual by topping the vines. Ninety Per cent. of the fruit is within eighteen inches of the gropd, and ninety per cent. of the vine is beyond that distance. The vino does not bleed, so that it may be cut fearlessly, and the removed branches should ho dug beneath the surface. The proper time is sithen the first •trait is of the size of an egg. The sums principle applies to lima beans. If allowed to grow et will they will roes• sure forty feet; but the first beans are formed on the lower part of the vine, and many of those ou the upper part of the vine never ripen. When the beans are five ket and a halt high, pinch off 'the terminal bud, and repeat this process shoultl a new shoot start from the final leaf 'Milk. In consequence of this short ening in, new shoots will be thrown out from the main stalk, and these will be well filled with buns, and so early In the season as to perfect their ripening befine frost. As compared with the old system of permitting the vine to run at any length unchecked, this has many advan tages. The main stalk becomes twice as large, the fruit-bearing shoots are formed early, and the amount of crop is doubled. On the old system more than half the bean-pOds are developed ton, lab to perfect tbenieelves before froet. Lima beans require heavy fertilization, and even the most highly nitrogenous ma, norm may be fearlessly applied In great quantities. Several cultivators have tried different methods of cultivations- One was In the habit of using poles live or six feet high, with rails tied on the top horispnially. Thus treated the beans bear au abund ant crop. • Another planted about the: c tolddle of May, In drills. The beans were three or four Inches apart in rows. For the want of poles, pea-brush wee used, and the ;rinse ran all over It. This crop was a very good one. Others, using poles, let the bean run to thi top of the pole. and then turn it down ; if too long or vigorous, it is turn ed up again. , But the simplest, most elfeeilve, and most approved methods are es we have stated; nip off the shoots at Si feet, and train to poles af feet apart. .hae been ascertained that well eared hay weighed In the field, July 20, and then 'stored in the barn until Febuary 20, had lost 271 per cent.. of Its weight It is, therefore, better to cell hay In the field at $l5 a ton, than from the barn atSW In mid-winter. POTATO Ittnia—One of our correspon dents writes that if farmers will plant their potatoes near the house or barn, -where the hens and young chickens can have tree weft to them, they will keep the bugs ofr. He says he has tried this plan for two years—last year and this— and has not been troubled with the "var mlnta." /111N0H1 WHEAT PROSPECTIL—The Chicago ./ourna/ says that the reports from Southern and Central Illinois are, almost Without exception, that the win ter wheat paned through tho'cold weath er innanisfully, and promises an unpre cedented harvest. The ImritiostEns.—Bingham, But ler, Loon and Stevens are the "liana lege of the impeachment outrage. And a pretty set they are. Butler accu ses Bingham of hanging an Innocent woman.. Bingham accuses Butler id stealing 'peens. Logan is accused of lumber encouraged the secessionists to 'rebel, and of hiving induced men to enlist In the rebel armies In the early stages of the rebellion. HeAs also accus ed of acting as counsel for parties who have practiced enormous swindles upon the Government. Stevens was the mov ing spirit in treasonable and revolution ary proceedings in Pennsylvania, thirty ppm ago, which occasioned the " Buck shot' War."
