We And in the Practiorg Parma the
fallowing eleeeeption of this kind of tur
key :
They hare been greatly in demand for
the past three years, and as frequent In
quiry is made or us, we may state that
their origin is a cram of oar domestic
with the wild turkey. They are much
sought for because they derive-kepi:the
wild stock—
Sit. Greatly increased size. We have
known the male to reach from thirty to
forty pounds each ; and one Is spoken of
at the recent exhibition of the New
York Agricultural Society, which weigh
ed forty-Ids pound., making a good
Christmas dinner for an ordinary fami
ly. Well authenticated accounts spear
of single birds having reached fifty-six
pounds each.
dd. The bronse turkeys also undoubt
edly derive hum their wild parentage
greatly increased hardiness. Every one
who has raised turkeys knows the diffi
culty of rearing them for the first two
months. They are the most helpless of
poultry, say up to three months old, suf
fering In various ways—from sudden
changes' of weather, from wet grailh,„too
early or too late exposure nights and
mornings, and also from injudicious
feeding. The turkey hen Is a very poor
.nurse, and seems to have far less of the
maternal Instincts! than the common
hen. She drags her young after her,
through high, wet grass, with her long
stridestrequently crushing one to death,
but never looking or seeming to care;
and If on settingont on a morning Jaunt,
with ten or twelve young ones, she
comes back with only cue, she sloes not
seem to be the least disconcerned, but
takes the matter as coolly as a defeated
politician. The turkey hen, perhaps, has
very little brain., or she would not be so
foolish as she is. It la undoubtedly best
to confine her for a few week. after
hatching In the yard, or perhaps still
better, to raise the brood under a hen.
11 is generally admitted that the young
&unite turkeys stand many more hard
ships than the common breed, and a
much larger per centage are reeled..
ad. A preference Is given to this varie
ty on account to the greater tenderness
of flesh which is admitted to be charac
teristic of the wild bird.
,Bitonse turkeys are so called because,
with zpreValling black color or ground,
there Is often a distinct bronze or copper
hue, showing to advantage, especially
In strong sunlight. They are, often,
however, entirely black, and vary so
much that color can hardly be relied on
as a test of purity. One of the largest we
ever saw weighed forty pounds, and was
quite light In color. Black, however,
With the been, shading, is most sought
after.

A correspondent of the Plow Arnan
haring asked to be informed of the most
proper season of the year for the appli
cation of plaster to pasture lands for ren
ovation ; also the best method of apply
ing the same, the quantity per acre
necessary for a fair trial, and the qual
ity of land to which it Is adapted—the
editor replies as follows :
"We think the early spring the best
season, say the latter part of March or
early in April. We would sow it broad
cast at the rate of about two hundred
pounds to the acre. Hilly pastures with
anorth, ern aspect and a mosey soil, are
most benefited by its appll4tlolt. On
granite soils or soils of gneiss formation,
which usually contain mortice less pot
ash, plaster works promptly and Moo
tively. But on locations where it has
not been found to work well, it should
be ✓applied in connection with wood
*Rhea. Where plaster has any precepti
'hie text at all, it beings in a luxuriant
growth o( white clover and otherwise
linykieres the grass. Many farmers ap
plyi It regularly once iu two yeses, and
find it the cheapest and most emnong
caLdreming they can apply. It ought to
be fresh ground. The dark variety is
thought to be the strongest and best."

' The editor of the Jfaine librmer hav
ing been asked what kind of disease
Sweeny is, quotes in response from "The

as fellowe:--The symptoms which ao

up the foot clear from the ground, it may
