tit if ettrantrg cnnpiltt. nernAr, FBEIRCART 2114 ItitS ROTATIO3G-NANtailL Tharirja each it thing as science and progress in conducting the operations of the farm and garden; and, with judi cious management, crops may be In creased, from year to year, until every acre esnt fruit tree will yield en annual crop equal to the nature of the climate and the capacity of the troll. The first thing is to know what to do, and the second Ss the most effectual and feasible manner of performing the oper ation. Science assures us that a Judi cious "rotation system" of operations, both on the farm and In the garden, Is better for the moll and more satisfactory for the pocket of the proprietor. And the rotation system extends to the ap plication of fertilizing matter to the land, as wail as to the production of crops. A rotation In the application of manure is a subject that is seldom thought of; and It applies especially to such cultiva tors as depend on mineral and commer cial manures. Lime, for example, Is the very founder Sou of successful agriculture in certain sections of the country. But, instead of applying this material every season, the result will be found more satisfac tory to try something else. Wood ashes have been* applied to some land with results so satisfactory that the bountiful crops were really surprising to_every beholder. But after a few dressings with ashes; even a bountiful application failed to produce an increase In the crop. A dressing of bone dust supplied what was lacking in the soil, so that the following crop was heavier than any previous harvest. If guano has been em ployed, lot Kuperpheephate or some other fertilizer be applied. Qypsum•has been sown on some farms for many successive seasons; and, in eome instances, the effect is so unsatis factory that the proprietors are in doubt ae to the etilelency of the fertilizer. Science suggests a rotatatm In such instances. The growing plants show that the soil does not lack sulphate of lime. There is in most soils, however, a deficiency of potash. Instead, there fore, of applying gypsum every year, 'give the land a dressing of ashes. If the soil her been dressed with straw manure for many years, let the value of . a yearly dressing be invested In guano, bone dust, euperphoephate, or sumeot her commercial manure, linnet this be ,itp plied Instead of so much straw material. Straw will not produce much fruit.— Straw'manure will give a heavy burden of vines and stalled. But In order to get a satisfactory crop of grain, or vegetables, some material must ke Awned that will supply the growing plants with the sub stance that every plant must have to develop the fruit In the form of grain or vegetables. Here is where science comes to our assistance., The man whose mind has been enlightelied by the study of the soil, who has made himself familiar with the rkidrements of growing plants, will be able' to determine, with almost uner ring certainty, what is lacking In order to produce a satisfactory crop of cereal grain, grass, fruit or-vegetables. Let a practical example suffice : Last season' when we were on the experimen tal farm or the Government, at Wash ington,, the Assistant Clerk oho' red us the growing crops- The wheat appear ed large enaugh to yield lifty.busheis of grain per acre. But the heady of grain were unusually light, and the kernels email, simply because the land bad not been fertilised with wheat producing material. He also showed the heaviest burden of squash vines that we ever saw. Indeed they formed a complete mat. But on the entire plot there wail not as much fruit as a South Jersey gard ener gathers from two hills. There was a deficiency of nitrogenous material such as we find, in the accumulations of cat tle stalls and Sheep sheds where the ani mals hare been fattened with corn meal and oil cake. In the mantire of animals fattened on inch feed there is an abun dance ofjust such pabulum as the grow ing plants must have to make them pro duce bountiful crops, while in the ac cumulations 'of stables where horses get very little grain, where sheep are half starved on poor hay and mouldy corn stalks, and whore cows get nothing bid damaged hay, cabbage leaves and a pall -1 of dish-water, with a pound or two of bbekwhost bran in it, there will be fertilising matter in the manure to make a Navy , burden of straw and vines, and only a small yield of fruit.
