New Subscribers.—Premium.—This is
the beginning of a new year, and a very
proper time to subscribe for the COMM.
Lv.n. The paper (greatly enlarged) con
tains weekly not only all the news worth
publishing, with agricultural and other
useful reading—but also a large.amotun
of valuable matter bearing on the politi
cal issues of the day. Iu local matter it
Is always in the lead.
One list is already large, but it can be
increased—and should be, the importance
of the coming Presidential campaign
considered. As an inducement to our
present subscribers to assist in the deal
rahle work, we make the following oar :
Any one now a subscriber to the Cost
FILER, who will send us the names of
four new subscribers, ioith the eash in ad
vance, (elgiA dollars,) will receive a
credit of one year's subscription on his
own account—fu other words, fora new
subscriber sent In, accompanied by the
naafi, a PREMIUM OF FIFTY CENTS will be
allowed as a ere6iit on present•subserlp•
Um). •
Who will be the first to go Into this
work? CIRCULATE THE TRUTH!
.1 Word irt46eason.—The enlargement,
of the COMPILER has brought with it a
vastly increased outlay—not only that
necessary in the start, but every week,
almost every day, since, for labor, paper,
and other materials.. And all this we
are compelled to meet without any in
crease in the priec of eubxeription. But
are 'ls'e meeting it? Scarcely—no!.4-
Why ? Simply _and solely because so
many who owe us don't pay. Our busi
ness is larger than ever, and yet we are
getting comparatively less each than
ever. This system won't do, and can't
be followed long unless backed by a for
tune—which printers seldom or never
are. The remedy, then, is, prompt pay
ment. Not next month, or next spring,
but now—at once—before another day, or
at latest, another week goes--by. We
cannot live on nothing, nor can our
workmen —nor will the paper-maker dis
pense the fruit of his capital for charity,
or oven on credit.
A new year is about to begin. Delin
quents, pay up, and start with a clean
book for 1868 ! Help us to adopt the
rmgh Icopitellt. It is best for everybody,
and we must resort to It under our heavy
outlays.
To-that goodly number who pay in ad
ourthankt4 cannot be too often ex
pre..ed. 'lint to that chasm who seem
never to think of paying the 'glitter, we
have only to sny 7 pdy of oncr, ma/ scut
judbrr trouble! •

525 MILES
PACIFIC RAILROAD,
Rannina West from Omaha
ICROSS THE CONTINENT,
=
This brings the line to the eastern base of the
Rockv Nimintalus, and It is expected that the
track will be laid thirty Miles further, to Evans
Pass, the highest point on the road, by January.
The maximum grade from the foot of the moun
tains to the summit is but eighty feet to the mile,
while that of many eastern roads Is over one hun
dred. Work in the rock-cuttings on the western
slope Win continue through the winter, and
there is no reason to doubt that the entire grand
line to the Pacific will he open for business In
1570.
The means provided for the construction of
this Great National Work are ample. The Uni
ted States arrant', its Sl.x.Per Cent. hoods at the
rote of from $lO,lOO to $412.000 per mile, for which
It takes a second hew us security, and receives
payment to a large if not the - full Patent of its
claim in serviees. These Bonito are issued an
each twenty-mile section is finished, and alter It
hen been examined by totted States Commis
sioners and pronounced lobe In all sawns a
first-clang mad, thoroughly supplied with depots,
repair-shops, stations, and all the necessary roll-
Inuit.* and other equipments.
The United States also makes a dondlCa of
12,1100 acres of land to the Mlle, which will be a
nriurce.of large revenue loth. Company. Much
of this land In the Platte Valley Is among the
most fertile in the world. tind other large por
tions are covered with heavy pine forests and
abound in coal of the beet quality.
• The Company is aim' authorized to lane Ste
own First Mortgage Bonds to an amount equal
to the issue of the Government and no more.
Hon. E. I). Morgan and Hon. Oakes Ames are
Trustees for the Bondholder*, and deliver the
Bonds to the Company only ae the work progress
es, so that they always represent as actual and
prOductlve value.
The authorized capital of the Cionapiny la One
linndred Million Dolbws, of which over floe
millions have been paid in upon the work al
ready done.
EAM.H.NOS OF THE COMPANY.
• At prownt, the prelits of the Company are de
rived only Nom its local traffic, but this is al
ready much more than sufficient to pay the
Interest on all the Bonds the ilbmpany can lame,
if not nuother mile were built. It Is not doubt
ed that when the road is eoglpieted the through
traffic-of the only line connecting the Atilintie
and Pacific Mates will be largebeyond precedent,
and, as there will be no competition, it can al
wayn be done at profitable rater.
It will be noticed that the Union naillc Rail
road Is, in fart, a Gaverwassist Work, built under
the supervision of Government officer., and to a
large• extent with Government money, and that
its bonds , are Issued under Government direc
tion. It is believed that no duillar seenrity is so
cordially guarded,and certainly nootber tabooed
upon a larger or more valuable property. As the
company's

AMERICAN
WALTHAM
' WATCHES_
The true value of Machinery applied to Watch
making Is not that by tie nee Watches are
made rapidly, but that they are made correctly.
Very few people know why a - Waltham Watch
should be superior to any other. In the first
place, at Walthemsthe Watch Is regarded as only
a machine, to be constructed like any other ma
chine, on mechanieul principles. If the Watches
sue good, it is bemuse the machineey is good.. Of
course there most be no defect In the principle or
plan of the movement—no mistake in the sizes Or
shapes of the pieces of which it is composed—
nothing wanting in their properties, and no error
In their positions. These polntaonco thoroughly
settled, It mate wholly with the machinery, con
structed with infinite diversity of form and tune-
Lion expressly for, the purpose, to produce the
finished pieces. By memo of multiplying gauges
sad mktroncopea, tests and Inspection the the de
tection of wear in the cutting Loeb", and for faults
and flaws In steel or stone are made to accompany
the work in every stage from beginning to end.
Asa necessary result, the watch goes together a
perfect machine. Every part is found to fit
properly In its place. Every pin may be pushed
till it pincher, and every screw turned home.
Imams, of a sluggish and feeble action, the bal
ance, even under the pressure of the slightest
mainspring, vibrate; with a wide and free mo
tion, and the beat has the clear ringing sound
always characteristic of the Waltham Watch.
The maehthe is a time keeper from the start.
This system of watchmaking is unknown in for
eign countries, and is entirely original with the
Waltham Company. The Company claim that
by it they produce watches that cannot be
equalled for every quality that makes a watch
valuabb . Simple In plan and correct In princi
ple, the Lao , . ement is not only beautifully finish
ed, substantial, accurate and cheap, but is uni
form in the minutest details, not easily damaged,
and when rslidred always as roodaa new. There
are different grades of finish in the different va
rieties of watches made by the Waltham Compa
ny, as there are different sizes and shapes to suit
all tastes and means; but every Watch that baser
the genuine trade-mark of 'Vs - Atrium" is guar
antied to be a good one, and nobody need be
afraid to buy It.
