Where does rain come front? You
answer, "From the clouds," But where
do the clouds come from? You may
think the wind blows them over you.
. But it It blows clouds over you from
nometthere else, it also blows them from
over yen on tr clear day as on a cloudy
or rainy day. On a fair day, when no
clouds are seen, the water is divided up
into such small particles, that 'it does
not obstruct the sun's light, and so you
see no elouda or water. A change of
temperature In the atmo.phere, as when
a warmer and colder curren t of air meet,
enIIPOO the small particles of water to
unite in pairs, and the pairs unite, and
these quedrnple drops unite, and so on
until hundseds or thousands of the small,
invisible particles unite in one, and even
then that one may be many. hundred
times smaller than a pin's head. A mats
of these combined drops, which are still
small enough to float in air, refracts,
- or bends out of their course so many of
the sun's rays that they stop and often
darken Its light, It Is thns that clouds
gather In a clear sky. When enough
drops unite to make one too heavy to
Host in the air, it begins to fall. It meet&
and unites with many others in falling,
and often so many unite that great rain
drops are 'formed by the time they get
to the ground. F. soh large drop is made
up:of thousands, perhaps millions, of
the Small drops that float in the unseen
air in a clear sky.
SHEEt . Citaust.—We are iii the habit
of believing that Yankees are sharp
when money is"to be made; but they
cannot begin with the patient, saving,
flinp-skinu Ing European% The English,
and even the ,Scotii, are improvident I
and wasteful in comparison. For in
stance, what. Yankee would ever think
of milking his sheep? Rut at Paris, in
the Exhibition, is a sample flock of
beerkept tixpressly for milking; and
heir milk in more profitable than the
wool or mutton. Ouc company in the
department of AVigpon makes of the
milk ocisheep four million pounds of
cheese a year, which Is sent all over
the world from Bucharest, in Roumania,
in New York, whence it is distrihuted,
HO 4roUbt,
, ovet the Western rutinent.
It is also Sent direct to China and South
America'. This is the much admired
Roquefort cheese. It is made with great
care, and ripened In extensive caves of
a perfectly even temperature, a model
of Which forms one of the ,features of
the Exhibition. We have no recollec
tion that oar mild farmers in this emit:-
tryhave turned their atteution to milk
ing sheep. It seems itis a very, profita
ble business. we learn that Mr. Henry
Ten Eyck, of Casenovia, is about to in
troduce. the milking process In his flock
of live thousand sheep on his farm in
lowa. We wait with angrty to learn
the result.—Albany (N. Y.),Cnirkerbork-
Cr.
IMPROVING MANI4E.—JORepiI Barris,
in hie Walks and Talks, says: "We
are making a cellar under the old barn.
The soil is very dry, and I spread a few
met loads of it on the top.of the manure
in the wettest parts of the barnyard. I
WAR astonished at the effect. It absorbed
the moisture and made a dryer surface
for tin, cattle, far sooner and better than
a gate layer of straw. Of course 'we
want some straw as well, but It is evident
. to me that a few cart loads of dry sand,
or `what Is far better, dry muck, Would
- saved good deal of straw in littering
yards nd stalls. Sand, too, when i mixed
with in nre, has the effect oflncreasing
fermentation. Plot Way's experiments
proved *him to be the case to an extent
far 'greater than any one had previously
- thought possible. In our eoldr - climate,
where it Is difficult to get manure ready
for spring crops, a little sand scattered
occasionally on the mane yard would
- increase .fermentatition and prove bene
ficial."
WILEAT FOR A BARREL OE FLOUR.—
The question, how much wheat does It
take to make a barrel of flour? Is often
asked, and the awnswer is of a general
character, "five bushels are allowed,"
At the annual Fair of the Dubuque Coun
ty AgNeultural Society, In 1866, a preml
uta of $3 was offered for the hest barrel
of I Menr made from winter wheat, and
alio the same from spring wheat. A
fh-pi entered ono barrel of each, accom
panied with the statement that sixteen
bushels of winter wheat yieltised three
bagels" and ono hundred and three
pounds of flour--at the rate of four bush
els and fifteen pounds of wheat to the
barrel. Of spring wheat fifty bushels
yield' eleven barrels of flour, being
four' bushels and thirty-two pounds
to the barrel. The wheat was a fair
quality and no more.
How Td l'untry TAINTED CASKS..—A
correspondent of the Country Gentleman
tells us how he does this: "Having had
some sad experierfee with both pork and
lard, I tried the experiment of putting
a small armful of dry shavings in the
cask, and setting them on fire. The
result wits — that the grease, and all other
impurities absorbed by the wood of the
cask, was brought to the surface and
burned. It can then be washed perfect
ly clean, and will Lo as good as new.
The shavings should be kept moving
by rolling the cask and stirring, that
the fire may not burn the cask, and that
the fire may search every part. Good
for rancid lard-tubs and butter-llrkins."
Fleawort Moue,—Boll one pint of milk,

The Braver b Baker.—The Best In tsr.
THESE Machines have become so well known
that little need be said by way of recommen
dation. They have taken the first qtremiunt at
all the late ritate Fairs, and are universally at
knowledged to be the BEST In use by all who
hate tried them. The “tirover Baker Stitch"
and the "Shuttle Stitch" are points that have
been attained by no other Machine. They are the
only machines that sew and embroider w ith per

to Family use. They are noiseless, sew directly
from the spool without le winding, and are sim
