Uloptnsburg, Feb. C One of the most re
markable criminal cases in Pennsylvania
was brought into court here today. On
September 10 last an attempt was made
to blow up the residence with dynamite of
the Hon. Levi E. Waller, a prominent
lawyer of this place. The attempt was
traced to Clifton Kuoor, a young man of
pood family, but of dissolute habits.
Knurr confessed on his arrest that he had
been hired by Lloyd S. Winters teen, a
lawyer prominent at the bar of this coun
ty and interested in many business ven
tures, to blow up Mr. Waller's residence
f r the purpose of killing Mr. Waller and
his family.
Wintersteen was arrested and to-day the
jrrand jury found seven true bills against
Wintersteen and Ki.orr, charging them
with several forms of atu-mptint; to kill.
A still more dastardly attempt at murder
was confessed to by Ki.orr to-day He
made a confession that prior to the at
tempt he made to blow up Mr. Wallet's
family that Wintersieen had iuduced him
to attempt the assassination of Mr. Wal
ler by shooting him. A contin-iance was
asked until the May term and will le ar-pued.

The big mills-wf the Apollo Iron ,t Steel

Nearly all the equipments have been re
moved to the new mills at Vandergrift,

been stated by the representative of the

however, say that a declaration of inten
tions tin the part of the company is not
necessary. Actions speak louder than
words. The closing down and partial dis
mantlement of the Apollo mills is regard
ed ty close observers as meaning their
abandonment. The uew Vandergrift mills
are now . in pai tial operation, and w ill
soon be in full blast. The removal of the
big steel mills is a serious blow to Apollo.
They were the mainstay of the town.

In all probability i bill will be presented
to tlie legislature which will have for Us
object the appointment of teachers in lb.
public schools by the principals instead of
by school boards as at present The bill
will also contain such provisions as will
have the etTei t of eliminating politics en
tirely from the schools. i'illsb:irg gentle
men are fathering the scheme.
Whether tlie evil elfect that will be ex
perienced from the unconscious or con
scious tendency ot tlie principals toward
fa voriteisni in the selection or retention of
teachers w ill be greater than the ii.llueiice
of politics in tlie election of teacher by
the school boards as now exerted in certain
cities, will be a serious question.

We suspect very strongly that the editor

If he were a stock raiser or a milkman and

store, anil tlie residence of Char'es Yowkel,
Major S. S. Barr ami Dr. J. R. Humes.
H. M. Hemshey ami Edward Nickodetnus,
w ho roomed next door to the bank, were
haken out of their beds by the force of
the expl ision.
The crime was committed by tearing out
the frame work about tlie bank door and
inserting dynamite. There is no clue to
the perpetrators. It is lielieved that the
rime is due to the revengeful conduct ol
leposjtors. Last September the bank
failed, and the statement of its condition
made a few weeks ago in court indicates
that it was iu an insolvent condition for
many years. Its assets are only sufficient
to pay between tifteen and twenty -cents
on tiie dollar.
