Early Saturday nioruing, Helrua Oerhli, a five-rear-old girl, wandered away from Snow Shoe. Later In the day her parents grew alarmed at her absence, and a party of neighbors searched in quest of the miss ing tot. The child was finally discovered in a small clearing, where, to the surprise of the searchers, she was romping with two bear cubs. After the child had been carried to a place of safety an effort was made to capture the cubs alive. The ani mals made such a commotion that a large female bear, evidently the mother of the cubs, was attracted to the scene. She charged the party of woodsmen who were attempting to carry off the cubs, and made it quite interesting for them. The men were unarmed, except with revolvers and clubs, and a desperate struggle ensued at close quarters. Her bearshio was finally killed, but not before several members of the party were terribly bitten and clawed by the enraged bear. The carcass of the bear weighed 250 pounds. Phillipsburg Journal.
