On Wednesday last Alf. Kinsey and

young ones, there beinn three that were
old and had lots of rattles.
Mr. Griffith Ashdown, who a dozen
years ago, with his family, was a resident
of Ebensbnrg. but since that time a resi
dent of Cleveland. Ohio, Is visiting friends
in Ebensburg. He is accompanied by bis
sons, James and William, now young men.
They made their journey on bicycles,
leaving Cleveland on Thursday of last
week and arriving Id Kbeosburg on Tues
day evening, having traveled leisurly
along for the purpose of seeing the coun
try. An exchange says men have various
ways of carrying their money. Hutchers,
grocers and bakers carry it in a crumpled
wad. Bankers in nice clean bills laid out
in full length in a morocco pocket book.
Brokers always fold their bills twice. The
young business man carries his money in
his vest, pocket, while the sporting man
carries his in his trousers pocket. Farm
ers and drovers carry theirs in their in
side pocket. Editors carry thuirs in other
people's pockets.
The Republican congressional confer
ees of this district have agreed to disa
gree and as a consequence they are holding
l wo separate sessions. One set of Bedford
cou my's conferees, favorable to.Tbrop,
along with the conferees of Mr. Evans
from this county, will meet at Altoona to
day (.Thursday), while the conferees of
Blair and Somerset and one set of confer
ees favorable to Hicks from Bedford coun
ty will meet at the same time in Tyrone.
They are pretty widely apart and there Is
no telling at tliis time of the result.
James Greeu, a resident ot Philadel
phia, threw himself in front of au Eleventh
avenue car in Altooua on Saturday with
suicidal inlei.t. The fender pushed him
about ."ill feet before the moloruiaii could
bring the car lo a standstill. Green was
picked up and removed to the city hospit
al, here it was discovered that he was iu-
oxicaled. He was terribly bruised, but
may recover. I'pon regaining conscious
ness the would-be suit ide said he was tiled
of life and thought that was as good a way
lo end his existence as any other. He says
he is unmarried.
The bv-product coke ovens w hich have
been iu the process of erection at iMmbar
for a year and a half, and whose trial tests
have been looked forward to with so much
interest by the coke and iron men, are an
umi uali tied success, savs the Greeiishuig
I'rtxM. This fact has l-een demonstrated by
a trial drawing of a few ovens which
show eil the coke to lie of a superior quali
ty. Nine of ibe fifty ovens have Uvu
charged and draw n with the most satis
factory results, tbe coke proving to In.- as
dense a;id hard as the Itest coke made in
the beehive oveus. The plant is not quite
completed, but is iu shape to produce coke.

On Friday of last week Misses Celia
Kirscb and Elmira Bearer, of Spangler,
were out driving and when near Lanlzy'a
railroad crossing a train came along aud
frightened the horse. Miss Bearer got
out and held the animal until the traiD
had passed and then got Into the buggy.
She had scarcely got seated in the vehicle
when a "pusher" that was following the
train came along and the horse agaio be
came unruly. Miss Bearer again jumped
out and caught tbe horse by the head but
the animal was by this time thoroughly
terrorized, and Iu his frantic efforts to get
avay jumped a fence with the plucky girl
hanging to him, which she continued to do
until she brought him to a stop, the engin
eer in the meantime having shut off tbe
steam, and both he and tbe fireman going
to the assistance of tbe ladies. Mis Bear
er was thoroughly exhausted and was also
badly hurt, one limb being sprained, aud it
is probable that It will be some time before
she will be able to be out.
Alleged sugar agents are reaping a rich
harvest among the farmers In some sec
tions. They take orders for sugar by tbe
barrel at a low rate. The "sugr" arrives
all right, and the agent pocksts the price,
but when tbe barrel Is opened it is fouud
to contain common salt, with a few pounds
of sugar In a compartment at each end of
the barrel.

On Monday Cambria county's Democrat

After the ballot the nominations
were made unanimous aud the con
vention then proceeded to tbe selection of
a candidate for state senator.
For the office of state senator George F.
Bauer, of Johnstown, and Frank P. Mar
tin. Esq.. of the same place, were named.
The first ballot resulted in the selectiou f
Mr. Martin by a vote of oti lo 10.
For congress, the name of F. J. O'Cou
nor, Esq., of Johnstown, was presented
aud he was uuanimously chosen as the
choice of Cambria county for congress.
Messrs. O'Connor and Martin were each
empowered to select their own couferees.
The committee on resolutions reported
the following:
The Democrats of Cambria county, in
convention assembled, heartily pledge
their support to the nominees of the Chi
cago convention, the Hon. William J.
Bryan, of Nebraska, for president, and the
Hon. Arthur Sewall. of Maine, for vice
president. We hail the illuslrous citizen
of the Flatte as tbe tribune of the people,
as the courageous, able and sincere cham
pion of the rights of the toiling millions,
not of the English syndicates, the Wall
street trusts, aud the millionaire money
combines. In bis wise leadership we look
hopefully forward to success.
We have much reason to expect success.
We staud to-day tbe representatives of tbe
masses, and not of the classes. We stand
for the right, and. having full confidence
iu the common people, we go before them
with our candidates, firm iu the convictiou
that our cause will be austained.
We indorse tbe Chicago platform. We
accept it as the honest expression of hon
est delegates In one of the most marvelous
conventions in the world's history. We
accept it as the expression of the common
people, and not of political demagogues,
who have ruled tbe party only that the
classes might prosper at tht expense of
labor. We accept all its tenets, and we
pledge it our most earnest support.
We heartily indorse thecourse of Joseph
A.Gray, oue of tbe delegates from this
state to the Chicago convention, for the
bold and open position he took at said con
vention in favor of the people's cause, and
for bis loyal support since of the platform
and candidates there nominated.
We want to heartily commend the cour
ageous stand of the Johnstown Ornutcrat
and the Pittsburg Pout, each of which is
ably battling for the rights of the people.
We bespeak for each the support of our
party and friends, and we do especially urge
that efforts be mde to extend their circulation.
On Monday night white some children
were playing near tbe home of George Ed
wards, of Johnstow n, a lighted torch was
upset which, set fire to the dress of his
daughter Frances, aged 14. The girl Im
mediately started for home wbeo the wind
fanned tbe flames until she was so badly
burned tbat she died several hours later.
