An equity case was before Judpe

A great coke war seems at hand. The
II. C. Frick company announced . some
days ago that its price for coke would be
advanced to $2 a ton. W.J. Rainey, the
second largest producer of coke, declared
Saturday that he will sell coke after Jan
uary 1 for 1 1.25 a ton. This great cut in
prices means a war among the operators.
it is believed. II. C. Frick refuses to say
w hat he will do about prices now.
Word comes from Dunbar, Pa., that
the father of an Italian girl, who is only
fifteen years old, received :iOfor her from
an Italian cokeworker, and the pair were
married Tuesday evening. The facts of the
sale leaked out through a disappoint!
Italian, whose bid of fciiio was refused by
the girl's father. The buying and selling

Johnstown Republicans are making
quite a kick over an attempt to steer the
influence of the liquor men in a certain di
rection for the nomination of a candidate
for county treasurer on the Republican
ticket. A prospective candidate, who is
said to have agreed, if elected, to run the
office on the shares, is being recommended
(with a club) to the good graces of the
litpior men, and they will at once proceed
to dance to the music prepared for them.

A few days ago while Charles Hall

highway, says the Rock Haven Icmtcrat.
He jumped out of the vehicle and was as

Major P. II. Walls, says Wednesday's
Philadelphia Tieu-s, who writes himself
down as from Altoona on theUirard House
registoi, is really from the new town of
Proserity, on tae Cresson and Coalport
toad, where he is general manager of a
large store and manages it in a manner
quite satisfactory to the miners. Pros
perity is one of three towns In the new
Cambria coal belt opened by Judge Dean,
General Beaver and Governor Hastings in
1X88. The other two are Frugality and
Congruity, singular names for towns and
about as odd as the maps produce. Major
Walls says they are growing centres ot
trade.
The jurisdiction and authority of the
teacher over the pupil is neither limited
by the school house walls nor the time the
school Is actually in session. As a general
rule in all matters connected with the
schools and the manners and morals of the
scholars the teacher's jurisdiction con
jointly with the parent's commences when
the pupil leaves the arental roof and con
tinues until his return from school. The
teacher, however, is not responsible for the
misconduct ot pupils on the way to and
from school, though he has right ti punish
for such misconduct when brought to his
knowledge. This is the Pennsylvania de
cision on the subject.
"Owney," the canine globe trotter,
passed over the Pennsylvania railroad on
Wednesday, bound for his home in Taco
ma, Washington. He left there August l'J
on a trip around the world, and traversed
the Pacific ocean, China Sea, Strait of
Malacca, Indian ocean. Gulf of Aden, Red
Sea, Suez canal, Mediterranean Sea,
Straits of Gibraltar and Atlantic ocean,
arriving in New York on board the steam
ship Port Philip on the -4th Inst. More
than ten years ago Oney wandered into
the post office at Albany, was picked up
and traveled the continent over and over
again. From his leather collar dangled
l'.xi brass tags or souvenirs from the var
ious places he has visited.
The hemlock, which a few years ago
seemed inexhaustible and was so long de
spised by lumbermen, will before many
years be as scarce as pine, says the Brad
ford Era. The output of hemlock in
Pennsylvania is estimated at iT0,tJi m, "
feet annually, necessitating 'he cutting
over &1 ,uiO acres of land which is thus
rendered practically valueless unless un
derlaid with coal, oil or other merchantable
mineral. The cutting of this vast area of
timber is of the most wastful character,
young and old being alike destroyed.
After the lumbermen come the tires which
semi-annually follow It their waste.
These do not confine themselves to the
slashings, but invade and destroy the
younger of the standing timber.

Fire at Patton.
Friday night the main building of the
I'mton Clav Manufacturing Works, of
l'altou, was destroyed by fire, entailing a
loss of about 13,X)0 on the building and
machinery. Hubbard & Wise, the con
ti actors, had 5,a) insurance on the
building. The building was a four-story
frame structure, 2U)xOO. It was still in
course of erection, but was nearing com
pletion. The manufacture of pottery was
lo be commenced next spring. It was the
largest establishment of its kind in the
State. Workmen had a rudely construct
ed brick furnace on the third story and had
a fire in it to keep it wirm. It is supposed
the fire communicated from the furnace to
the building, but the contractors think the
fire was of incendiary origin.
The Patton Clay Manufacturing Com
pany consists of Hon. James Kerr, of
Clearfield; George S. Good, Lock Haven;
Alexander Patton, Curwensville; General
George Magee, Horning, N. Y.; W. II.
Sanford and E. C. lirown. of Patton, and
F. E. McElfresh, of West Virginia, the
la-it named being a practical clay manu
facturer. It is expected that the building
will be reconstructed as soon as possible.

The Pennsylvania Railroad Company
announces that clerical orders for the year
lwu will be issued to ordained ministers of
the gospel located on Its system east of
Pittsburg and Erie inclusive, on the same
conditions as prevail at present. Clergy
meu who desire to avail themselves of this
privilege should make application to the
nearest ticket oflice of the Peunsyluania
railroad, so that orders may be issued at
once.
The Tribune's Opinion.
One week from to-day Messrs. James C.
Darby and Daniel A. McGough retire from
the public service in which they have been
engaged, the former having served two
terms as Prothonotary, a period of six
years, and the latter as Register and Re
corder of Cambria county for a period of
three years. Hoth of them have performed
their duties in an intelligent and gentle
manly way, and have received the ap
proval of the people. If their successors
are as kind and congenial as we believe
they will be, then it Is "Good-bye. Doss,"
and "Good-bye. Dan," forever, and they
will have the proud distinction of being
the last pair of Democratic oflicials to hold
oflice in Cambria county. But then it is a
great mistake to hold that all the pleasure
of life is in being a public official, and both
these gentlemen possess elements of char
acter that will enable them to succeed in
private stations. Momay' 8 Johnstoum

DEALER IN
A Broken Lev Comes Hl(li.
For receiving a broken leg in a runaway
on the Milheim turnpike In Centre county,
Isaac W. Raven has just compromised
with the company and been paid $3,000
and all costs. Raven's case was tried
twice in the lower court and heard before
the supreme court, and in all three he got
a verdict of $5,un. This amount tbe
Turnpike Company refused to pay. The
result was the turnpike was put up for
sale by the sheriff, but on the day of sale
there were no bidders save Raven himself.
and as he could not utilize the turnpike to
advantage, he refused to buy. Then the
com nan v offered him the alternative of
accepting $3,000 and costs or getting the
amount of his verdict as best he could.
Raven accented the former and the case j
has been settled.
