ment, from army headquarters at

Eighth infantry, composed of live com
panies, from l ort Ru.-sell, in charpe of
Major Kisbee, had left Market Lake
for Marys vale. They had -.0 days' sup
plies for tiie entire command, which
included the squadron of cavalry now
on its way to Marys vale.
Th- dispatch said further that Jen
eral C'oppinper had not lepii heard
from. The cavalry has probably ar
rived at Marysvale. Army o.l.cials es
timate tha the infantry can, under
forced n ar -h. reach Marysvale in six
days. In view ol the peaceable char
acter of the reports from the scene of
the troubles, such hurry, however, will
not. in the opinion ol the otlicials here,

The Marmaton river has overflowed its

when he was visited by a delegation of
citizens bearinp a pe it on that he call

his enforcement of the Sunday closing
law. The petition said the enforce
ment of the law was causing much
drunkenness iu tenement houses. Tr.
the delepation Mayor Strong said:
I am sorry, but this will have to be
buried. You know our administration
was elected because Tammany had Ken
lax in enforcing tlie laws, especially the
excise law. In fact, the Lexow com
mittee proceeding- clearly proved that
the excise law had been made, not lor
enforcement, but to bleed the saloon
keepers. In its strict enforcement we art
working fcr the saloonkeepers' interest.
The repeal of the law can be brought
about only by enforcing it ripidly. f

keepers. Ninety per cent of them ae
just as pood men as any other citizens.
They have just as many riphts as
others, and I am trying to get them

break the law. What we want to pet

A Cleveland Man Arrested I or Not Serv
ing in the Army.

has returned from Germany.
While in Reichsnan, (iermany, he
was arrested and thrown into prison for
having failed to serve three years in
the army, as required by the ( iermaii
law. The authorities informed him
that for this offense he had been fined
200 marks and must serve 40 days in
jail.
After much trouble (Jlaser sueceded
in securing a hearing a;id was finally
told that his sentence had been remit
ted, but that he must not leave Ger
many until his case had been investi
gated by a higher court. He, however,
left the country at the first opportunity.

Haoekstowx, Mil., July 31. James
Beard, colored, of Brunswick. Mil., has
been arrested near Charle.-iowu, W. 'a.,
and lodged in jail on the charge of
shooting five colored men at a picnic at
Island park, in the Patomae, in this
county. Beard got into an altercation
and fired his revolver in a crowd.

vention to Consider the Maimer.

issued for a convention of all the pud
dlers in The Sixth district, to be held at
Youngstow n on Aug. !, to consider a
proposition to surrender tlie charters of
their lodges iu the Amalgamated asso
ciation ami formulate plans for a new
orpanizatioii. This action is the result
of tiie discovery by the puddlers that
tiie new scale of wages does not take
eifect on Air.'. 1, as they had expected.
According to one clau-e of the agree
ment between tiie ir -n workers and the
manufacturers, the shipments of bar
iron from the m lis during July and
August are to Ik- reported and the scale
la.-ed upon tho.-e shipments is to take
etiect on or after Sept. 1. The puddlers
claim they were ignorant of that apiee
ment. Tlie sentiment in favor of break
ing away from the Amalgamated asso
ciation is said to l-e grow ing, and it is
believed the Youngstown convention
will re.-ult in action of that kind.
