The postollice authorities call atten

pressiun that one cent or two cents will
prepay tin- postaire on any newspaper.
The fact is that the rate is one cent for
each four ounces or fraction thereof.
Moreover, newspapers and periodicals
must t,e mailed entire, and if tin- adver
tising or any other portion of them are re
moved before mailing they become third
class mailer, and the rate of postage is
increased to one n-m for each ounce.

Karely has there been such a large audi
ence assembled in Kbeiisburg as was pres
ent at the school hall on Wednesday even
itu; to w itness the commencement exercises
of the class of "'.i.". hong before the exer
cises begun all the chairs in the large hall
wt re occupied, the aisles crowded, and
some could not g.-t in at a!l. The tnein
tiers of the class entertained the audience

been particularly gratifying to their teach

Kev. J. Hunt invoked the divine blessing
upon Hie members of the class, and offered
words of hope and encouragement to them
in lighting life's hattl.-s.
Carl ll. Mclxenri.-k delivered the Salu
tatory in a manner that captivated the
audience, and in a neat and w ell-word, d
address, hid those present a hearty wel
come. The class history w as in the hands of
hdward t . Joi.es, w ho recited briellv and
eiitertainiimly a little history and a few per
sonal recollections of each of the inemlH-rs.
A duet entitled "Serenade ofOonPas
quale." was rendered by M isses Ada Jones
and May Iais, and was much appreciated
by the audience.
An essay on "Modem Woman" was read
by Miss Minnie Kirschner, in which she
proph.-cied a brilliant future for women of
the next decade.
An oration entitled "Political Parties of
To-day," -a as delivered by Harry J. Wit
her, wliii, from the manner in which he
handled his sudj-t. indicated that he was
u; to date on political matters.
The "Fickleness of Fashion" w as dis
cussed bv Charles Hasoii. w ho ridiculed
the fashions without stjm, and paid his
compliments to "'our friend, the dude."
The next was a recital ion by Miss Mav
Da vis. i-iii it led "Jamie"" a pathetic little
piece, rendered ill a cleM f tliallllel'.
The Class Prophecy, by Miss Ada Jones,
was a short but well written piece aiioiit
the future of the class, and was recited in
a charming manner.
The Class Artist. Harvey Williams, was
as funny as his subject was original, and
he tickled the audience for about twenty
minutes w ith his comic caricatures.
Anoratii.ii entitled "Superstition" was
discussed in a scholarly manner by P.eii
jainin Williams and his remarks indicated
considerable reading and research.
The Valedictory w as in the hands of
Walt.-r Pei iy, w ho discuss.-d "'Progress of
Kducat ion." and also thanked the people

Alvin hvans. Ks.p, made an address to
the class, congratulating the members and

strangled: the left side of bis head was

bludgeon.

of the perpetrators of the deed. The gen
eral impression is that he was murdered

of the Pennsylvania P.ii'road Company at
Altoona. but old age com m.-n.-i ng to break
him down, he chose for the past eight
months the retired, secluded life of a her
mit. lie was la-t seen alive on Thursday, and
neighbors, not seeing him about since that
time, and noticing a peculiar odor coining
from tin- house, made an invest igat ion and
found hi corpse on Sunday.
The general appearance of the small,
poorly furnished room indicated that a
desperate struggle had taken place, and the
old man had defended him -elf the best he
could. The old gentleman was couipari

money the unfortunate man had in his
posse-sion is pot known, but il is believed
that he had considerable money. The only
