It is only the explo-ion of gas. in which
hundreds of lives ale destroyed, that
a.vaki :is the general public to the dangers
of coal mining. Statistics show that the
rate of mortality among miners from the
above cau-e is Jo per cent., and the num
ber of de.u lis from fall- l(f roof and coal
I form Cl p.-r cent. The general public
I scarcely ever hears or takes note of the
j number of deat. is from these sources be
cause they are taken oir one by one and
n.v spap.rs do not gi ve pul.iicty to them.
The wi iter, after a long observation in
coal regions, is con vinced that the death
rate among coal miners caused by defect
ive ventilation exceeds that caused by both
tin- above sources of danger. Among the
worst en. ini. s to the life and health of the
miner is the gas known chemically as car
bonic hi id. It is caused by the breathing
of ani inals and t he burning of light-, and
is carried into the "workings" from the
surface by water. Lights will not burn in
an atmosphere that contain- ten per cent,
of tlii-ga-. If the miner remains in air
thatcoiitaiusmoretl.an ten p.-r cent, he
would soon become a-phyxiated. It effects
the heart and lungs and causes consump
tion, catarrh, asthma, etc. A person eat:
tell a miner by his sunken eyes and pallid
face.
The miner endures a miserable life in
ihi- foul atnio-phere until he is incapaci
tated for work or until death relieves him.
There an- a few miners who refuse to work
in a mine when it is had. and sometimes
they report the condition of the mine to
the proper authorities of the law. They
are known to the operators as agitators
and law -breakers.
Explosive gas is con-i.lcred the greatest
danger that the coal miner has to contend
wit h. but this element of danger has more
effect to cause good Ventilation than all
the laws and inspectors that have cost the
slate a million of dollars. The reason for
this is the se f-interest of the operator.
Wlien an explo-ion occurs it destroys the

Huntingdon, Pa., March 4. News has
reached here of a probable murder com
mitted at Mill Cre.-k last night. Cloyd
Coy. aged II, sat directly In-hind David
Wilson, aged LM, in the First Methodist
church and found great pleasure in stick
ing hits of chew ing gum in Wilson's hair.
Wilson remonstrated, and threatened to
slap Coy's mouth. This angered Coy. w ho
drew a large knife and began whetting it
on his shoe, remarking to a companion
that he would "cut Wilson's heart out."
As soon as services were over and the con
gregation was leaving the church, Coy
thrust the knife into Wilson's abdomen.
Physicians believe the victim will die.

It has been developed by the testimony
of the physicians and others liefore the
Coroner's jury selected to investigate the
death of tirant Xuf.ill. sou of ex-Postmaster
Zufall. of Myersdale, Somerset county,
that the young man whose body was found
in the canal al Cumberland on the li'.th of
February, was brutally murdered by per
sons whose identity is more than suspect
ed. The iii'iuest showed that the liody
had been in the canal only a short time be
fore being discovered and it was doubtless
thrown there by his murdercis.
Detectives working on the case have
discovered that Zufall was hit on the head
with sufficient for-.-e to dislocate his neck
and that his body was kept concealed in a
cellar for a number of days until decompo
sition set in when it was hauled away by
a colored ma:i. who threw il in the canal.
