Saturday morning last the dead body of K. I. Hartley, of llellvvood, a tailor by occupation, was found in his room. Hart ley had not been seen for a week previous to the finding of his body. The supposi tion is that he committed suicide, as an empty laudanum bottle was found on a trunk near the cot on which the body, w hich was badly decomposed, lay. A team that was alxuit being hitched up at the livery stable of O'Hara, Luther A- I avis on Thursday morning started on u run with the sw inglctrees and double tree attached. They ran on to the pave ment in front of the Mountain House pool room and then turned, when each horse taking opposite sides of one of the large shade trees on the curb, separated the team and one horse was thrown and then captured. The other ran to the jail where it ran against the iron fence, breaking olf one post and breaking down a panel of the fem e. One of the horses was severely hurt while the other escaped injury. I'nder the building and at tached to the fuse was a quantity of dyna mite sufficient to have blown it into kindling wood. At the other end of the the fuse was a lot of matches, some of tlit-m burned and some not. and some papei that tiad tM-eii set on lire. It was evident that the parties to the dastardly deed had set lire to the paper, exuecting il to com municate to the fuse, and made a hasty departure. The lire in the paper after burning slightly did out and thus avert ed an explosion that would have destroy ed the building. The discovery w as kept quiet for the purpose of trying to liu-1 out w ho the guilty parties are. F.rrtaft- Pair Foand. k rles Lane, a former resident of the Seventeenth ward, and Miss Annie Hoov er, who also formerly lived in this city, were arrested yesterday at Greensburg by Constable Isaac J. Harris, and the long looked-for pair now occupy separate cells in the city orison awaiting transportation in the county -jail. The charge against Lane Is ad u I try, which was made by Eliz abeth Wise, while Annie is Indicted on oath of Mrs. Alice Lane, the wife of ttie the prisoner, with fornication. Early last July Lane deserted his wife and three children and went to (Ireens burg. Some two weeks later Annie took her departme. It was generally tielieved the pair had eloped, but ctTorts to' locate them proved failures until yesterday, when Constable Harris learned that the parties were living together as man and wife at Greensburg. Theoflicer, armed with ttie legal papers, departed yesterday morning, alid after much trouble located Lane and Annie in ttie outskirts of Greensburg. Lane, sin-e living Johnstown, has been known as Charles Lane, alias Charles Ross, alias Charles Alexander. Immediately after their arrival last night on the Fast Line lioth were escorted to the olliee of Alderman Harris, where the charges against each were read. Suspicion was at once aroused, and the matter was lieing investigated w hen he was arrested. It is suspected, and on good grounds, too, that the child was put out of the way. On Tuesday afternoon when Mrs. John Morgan, residing in Cambria township, about three miles southe-ist of Ebeiisburg, went to ttie barn, accompanied by anoth er woman, for the purpose of filling a bed tick w ith straw, they weie startled to see the lifeless body of a man hanging sus pended from a beam, with a rope around his luck. Word was sent to Ebeiisburg and several people went out to see if they could identify the man, as he was a stranger in the nc ighliorhood. He was identified as an insane man, a Slav by birth, who had lieeu an inmate of the almshouse for a year or more, and who was previous to his admission to the alms house a resident of Hastings. Several weeks ago tie escaped from the almshouse and since that lime he had lieen tramping the country, and notwithstanding the authorities were searching for him. he succeeded ill eluding them. He was about 30 years of age, and was known at the almshouse as the "dummy." as he never talked to anyone and would stand or sil iu one position for hours at a time. We failed to learn his name. On Monday evening M. J. Wait., a well- know u carpenter and contractor of Gal lil.in, apeared al the watch-box at Kit laiiniug Point with his arm broken and a number of cuts and bruises on his head and fare. He was unable to explain how he received his injuries but supposed that when he was getting off one train another came along and siruck him. He was laken to the Altoona Hospital where the surgeons amputated his left arm above the elbow. Mr. Walt, is now a resident of of Gallitiu but was a former resident of Clearlield township, residing near Chest Springs, w here he ow ned a farm.
