Simpson, a M t. IMeasant hotel proprietor,
was taking some money from the till, a

Mioulder and grabbed a handful of cash.

William Armstrong, a brakeman on
the U.-ech Cr-ek railtoad. had his left
arm caught lietween the bumpers while
coupling cars at the Keilly mines, near
ration, on Thursday of last week, and had
the member broken below the elbow, lie

The Italian w ho was arrested a couple
of weeks ago charged with committing an

township, had a hearing on Thursday of
last week before Siuirc Jones, of this
place, and was positively idrutitied by
MissKush. He was committed to jail to
await trial.
A horrifying accident betel a little
child of Mr. and Mrs. .Join, farlo.of Mam
moth, on Wednesday afternoon. The lit
tle one was missed about : o'clock, and af
ter an hour s search was discovered in the
water closet vault dead, haying smothered
to deith. The mother is almost crazed

l'oi tei. of this place, took her brother. Mr.
Uandolph Myers, w ho has been an invalid
for sev era! years, out for a drive. On t heir
return, when Mr. Myers was being as-ist-ed
out of the buggy, the horse Marled, and
one of his legs got between the spokes of
the wheel of the buggy, and before the
horc could be stopped, one of the bones in
bis ankle was broken. Mr. Myers has
been sick for several years and this addi
tional misfortune is a severe one.
Adam VoleiilTg and Michael Mol.in,
two miners, w bite at work in the Mill
mine at Johnstown, were caught- under a
fall of coal, tin; former killed while the
latter escaped w ith a few slight, bruises.
M'llin was working near a car at the
ti;ne t he accident happciiitl and when the
crushing mass fell the car held the weight
from him ami saved him from the fate of
hi companion. The deceased was a
w idower aged forty-live and had been in
this countiy only a few months. He
leaves six children in (o'linany.
Mr. Samuel Krallier, a well-known
citi.'-nof Jackson township, died al his
iiome on Monday evening, aged 7"J years.
The deceased was born near Morrison's
(.' vc. i'.edloid county, September 2nd.
I "J. and removed with his parents to
Klai-Klick tuwnship. this county, in 1'!,
w here he continued tu reside until aliout
twenty-live years ago, when he purcli.ised
a farm in Jackson township. The- tie
ceased was twice married ami is survived
by a widow and ten children, eight by bis
lirst wife and two by his second.
A m-wly discovered jicst is ravaging
the apple ind pear orchards of Pennsyl
vania. Through its work the annual
crops will be reduced one-third. Its work
resembles thatof the locust family and in
three year will ruin an entire orchard.
The pi t i a small horn beetle of the same
family that destroys the pine trees in the
northern licit of Virginia, and the only
w ay lo prevent its ravages is to trim off
the branches from three to six inches be
yond the track of the insect until healthy

Miss Cora Stickler, a well-known
young resident of Milton, was horribly,
perhaps fatally, burned the other evening.
She had gone into the basement of her
mother's store wilh a kerosene lamp in
her band. In some unaccountable manner
her clothing became ignited. John Sun
gar, a ncighixir, heard her screams and
ha-teiiing to her aid found her in flames,
which he succeeded in extinguishing af
ter a heroic light. The upper part of her
body was not burned, but her arms and
limbs are horribly scarred and it i eared
-he cannot recover.
The citizens of Patton w ill again vote
on the question of issuing $10.'NiO of school
bonds for the purpose of paying for the
school building recently built in that town.
The Patton people voted on the question
at the last spring election when the propo
sition was carried by a vote of -Jot to ;V,
but several informalities in the submission
of the question make it necessary to again
vote upon it, w hich will le done at the
general election.
Wheal sold in Chicago market on last
Friday for :o cents, the lowest mark ever
reached. This is hard on the producer,
but we assume the consumer will not feel
angered at the market price. As the latter
can be country by the millions and the
former only by the hundreds, there will
hardly beany bread riot in ibis country
this year. The w heat market like the sil
ver market is over-stocked, hence the won
derful decline in values.
Quite a grist was run out of the natur
alization mill on Monday. Seventeen res

Some one who w ants to explain what
editorial "we" signifies says ii has a varie
ty of meanings, varied to suit the circum
stances. For an example: When you
read that "we expect our wife home to
day," we refer to the editor-in-chief:
when it i "we are a little Ute w ith our
work," it includes the whole oflice force,
even to the devil and towel: in "we are
having a Immhii." the town i meant: "we
received over Tni.imi last year," it em
braces the nation; but "we have hog
cholera in our midst." only mean the

A shooting affray occurred on Thurs
day afternoon of last week at Kittaiining
Point, w here a force of men are employed
in making a new reservoir. A colored man
named Alexander Johnson has a shanty
there, and when he came home from work
he found it occupied by Jim Moden, Nora
Johnson ami Reese. Xorse. Johnson was
jeal'ius of Moden, who was paying atten
tention to hi wife, and an altercation en
sued in the shanty, which ended by .Moden
drawing a revolver ami shooting at John
son five t imes. one of t he shots taking ef
fect in the back. The wound is not be
lieved to be fatal. M'Kleli fled.
Jacob Nolan, of Fourteenth ward.
Johnstown, returned home on Saturday
after spending a month as an involuntary
guest of Warden Young, in jail. In an in
terview with a Johnstown reporter Jacob
states that he is not pleased w ith the man
agement of the jail: then' art; no printed
bills of fare to order from, no napkins fur
nished, vermin are plentiful, grub scarce,
and for a man like Jacob, who, as be says,
is a Republican of twenty years' standing,
there is too much essence in the colTee.
Jacob says he is now done voting the Re
publican ticket, and for that much he
should he thankful. Some men from read
ing, thinking and new intelligence, aban
don the Republican party, but there are a
vast number, who. like Jacob, could be
benelitted by a month in jail.

the pleasure of listening to was given last,

The Cambria Iron Company will soon
commence t he erection of retort ovens at
Johnstown to manufacture coke under the
Otto-llotTmau process, the patents for
which wen; recently purchased by the Otto
Coke and Chemical Company, the Cambria
Iron Company being the principal party in
the new company. According to ihestate
tnents of a leading member of the Cambria
Company, coal from ther mines near Con
emaugh w a shipped to Cermany, w here
it was found that it made the best brand
of coke when handled by the Huffman
process.
The ex periment was in operation at the
time of tli3 death of James J. Fronhciser.
in Germany, who was then; superintend
ing it. Aftera little delay the experiments
were continued, and Attorney Cyrus Klder
has just returned from (Jermany, having
completed the jiurchase of all the patents
of the nev prot es for the United States
and Canada. This system w ill revolution
ize coke-making, as it gives a very high
grade of tneterallurgical fuel from inferior
coals.

The Altoona Tribune of Monday says:
C. W. Mellorand L. P. Slich, the Altoona
agentsof the Columbus HrewingCompany,
of Ohio, who were returned by the Consta
ble of the Second ward for selling liquor to
several landlords in the city without li
cense, miit stand trial for that ofTcnso in
the county court. Such was the tenor of
the decree tiled by Judge Hell on Saturday
on motion to quash the indictment because
no preliminary hearing had been granted
the accused.

Frederick Dodtls. aliout 34 years old, a
coal miner, was shot ami killed on Satur
day night by John Stalnet k r, a brick
layer. The shooting occurred at a dance
at the Gross place, two miles west nf
tireensburg. Tin; dance was given by
Stalnecker and four brothers named Kelly.
There wa a supply of whiskey and beer,
and for .Ml cents, paid upon entering the
house, all privileges were granted.
A bout in o'clock Ootids and a party of
friends arrived, ami a dispute arose as lo
the payment of the admission fee. Two or
three "'k nock -downs" resulted, and then
the report of a revolver scattered tin; com
batants. Dodd was found lying on the
Hour w ith a bullet wound in his tight side.
He died l.'i minutes afterward.
Stalnecker. who claims he was drunk
and has no remembrance of the shooting,
after the Hash from the revolver, rushed
from the house, jumped over a high pailing
fence and w ent home. I le w as found t here
on Sumlav morning with a sprained ankle
and a badly battered face. He was taken
to jail. The Kellys. I Iomer. John. leorge
ami Harry, were also arrested and cun
mit ted to jail as accesories to the killing.
Stalnecker is about -3 years old.
