FftriTS are better than drugs to improve
the stomach and complexion. It is not a
fact that fruits produce acidity of the
stomach. On the contrary, they-correct
it. Ripe apples. cars. plums and peaches
eaten raw, without sugar, are medicine
for a sour stomach. The vegetable salts
are converted into alkaline carbonates
which purify by counteracting the acidity
already in the stomach. Diners who
overeat and have fits of indigestion and
the blues next morning, take tarlionate of
soda, in tablets or liquid; a ripe, juicy ap
ple or two and no other breakfast would
cost less and do more Rood.
Fall, plowiug has been commenced in
every section but is greatly retarded ow
ing to the dry condition of the soil.

Nimrod was a mighty hunter, at least
that is what the Rible avers. In the pres
ent age of prevaricators he has many imi
tators, and in the language of modern
spoilsmen, "Nimrod was not in it."
There were several very fair samples of
the aforesaid "modern ?ortsman"' in
town last week, waiting, only waiting,
for the day to come which would bring
with it the right to wage an exterminating
warfare against the small quadruped with
the big bushy tail. Among these would
be mighty hunters may be mentioned Mr.
Thomas P. Strittmatter. well-known to
hi fellow townsmen as-- a truthf-.il young
man (except during the hunting season I;
Simon Long, not entirely unknown to
many of our residents as one who can smell
a squirrel farther than most men can see;
and Mr. H. E. Andrews, of Pittsburg, a
gentleman who dabbles in pot hooks for
a living, and who came here with the im
pression that he could shoot squirrels as
fast as he can write shorthand.
As soon as the legal embargo was raised,
these sanguine hunters shouldered iln ir
shot-guns and marclu-d boldly to the fray.
Out the .road they briskly walked
with martial tread, singing snatches ol all
the hunting chorises they had ever heard,
and some w hich they had not.
Arriving at the scene of the proposed
slaughter they separated and commenced
i still hunt for the fierce, ferocious man-
eating squirrel. 1 he day was full of
excitement and stirring incidents; among
the latter may lie mentioned the stirring
leaves. .Nut a sound was beard nor
i funeral note," as our sportsmen wended
their way through the unbroken forest.
save a smothered ejaculation now and
then as sunn; one slipped on a mossy stone
lud sat down suddenly to muse on the uu-
certianties of life. Pretty soon, however,
t he crack of the shot-gun was heard and
the first squirrel was credited to Mr.
Sti iltmatter. After this the forest echoed
and re-echoed w ith reports from t lie trusty
shot-guns, and liefore night shadows fell
on mountain top and leafy glade, each
hunter bad a pretty fair string of game to
give evidence ot Ins skill. J lie enure par
ty bagged fourteen qiiirrt Is, twenty-three
piuies. and shot a iiinntx-r ol chipmunks
when nothing else offered. The tails to
verify this statement may be seen upon
application. Put the harmless squirrel
was not the only game that was bagged
that day. When penetrating a Icnely
tiiountain dale, w hich was almost an im
passable growth of maple undergrowth.
Mr. St tit tinat ter heard an omuioiis purring
ouiid :u the branches above his head, and
looking hastily around In-saw two yellow -
ye-balls glaring fiercely at him through
the foliage. To think was to act, and a
second later the possessor of the eve-balls
ay stretched in agony of sudden death, at
his feel. "A wild-cat as sure as my name
is Thomas:" ejaculated the astonished
hunter. Ele he had scarcely recovered
from his surprise, the same warning sound
was repeated and the mate of tlie.lii-t
wild-cat was sei;n on the Utugh of a huge
lemlock near at hand. He also fell a v ictim
to the unerring shot-gun.
These are the liisi wild-cats that have
eei i seen in tiiis vicinity for a numlxT of
years, and their loss Will not lie deeply
mourned. In fad Mr. Strittmatter de
serves the thanks of t he community forde-
