Professor Kiley. in a lecture before the
Lowell institute, discusses most practical
ly the subject cf how to get rid .if house
hold pests. For certain of the commoner
pests, such as liedbugs, carpet beetles and
clothes moths, benzine applied in a fine
spray ty means of an atomizer was said to
le the best remedy as It destroys the insect
in all stages, including the egg. In the
use of benzine great care should be exer
cised that no fire or artificial lights is in
the room at the same time, as the vapor of
benzine is highly explosive.
For cockroaches, bristle-bugs, fish
moths and fleas, pyrethrums Kiwders are
recommended. For the destruction of the
mosquito, the professor recommended
pyrelhrum powder moistened, made into
little cones, then allowed to burn in a
closed room. The effect is to stupify or
kill the mosquito. It was a mistaken idea
that the mosquito bites inoculated the
body with malarial poison. The idea
came from the fact that mosquitoes and
malaria flourished usually uuder the same
condition.

best for the country? Put is any good
end to be attained by such ridiculously
contemptible statements as appear in his
letter concerning Henry (i.-orge and the
single tax ?
I think not. For if the single tax is a
bad thing it can sun ly be show n up w il h
oul misrepresentation, but if it is a good
thing why should I he friends of justice an
tagonize it.
If Mr. Kehe bad taken the trouble to in
form himself of what Henry George
teaches be would have known that he
does not and never did advocate that the
land should lie be divided up. nor that
property should lie destroyed in order to
"bring capital to terms''
Mr. Kehe has probably read or heard the
falsified reports from the enemies of Mr.
George and his theory, those enemies are
the friends of the very monopolies which
Mr. Kehe condemns.
He says "strikes are aimed at oppression
caused by centralized capital. If this is
true then it follows that the. single tax
would not lie a remedy."
Put strikes are not aimed at centralized
capital. They are simply a resistance
against the "iron law of wages" inherent
in our system of land tenure and taxation,
that wages always tend to the minimum
of a bare living.
This the si.igle tax would remedy lie
cause il would give labor access to the
natural resources and leave the producer
in the full possession of his product, in
stead of as now encouraging capital iu the
monopolization of natural opportunities
while taxation taking from labor a large
share of its wages. j. y.

BOW (RING)
it is easy to steal or ring watches from tr.c
pocket. The thief pets the watch in cue
hand, the chain in the other and rivet a
short, quick jerk the tinj; slit's orT the
walch strm. and away poes the watch, leav
ing the tictiui only the chain.
This idea stopped
that little game:
The bow has a groove
on each end A collar
runs down inside the
pendant utemi and
fits into the grooves,
firmly locking the
bow to the pendant,
so that it cannot be
pulled or twisted oft.
