An aliened agent for a Michigan plow-
company is said to lie traveling over the
country selling sulky plo as to farmers at
double pi ices aud taking notes for the
same on the understanding that one-half
the amount lit boarded out at the rate of
one dollar a day. and if the fanner wishes
to pay in ten davs he to have eight per cent.
discount. The agent also offers to credit
on the note one dol'ar and a half for every
customer to w bom the farmer may intro
duce him. When he gets the note the
agent disappears aud the note turns up in
the hands of third parties who demand
full settlerneut. Look out for these shai p
ers. During the prevalence of the heavy
thunder storm of Friday evening last a va
cant house at Portage was struck by
lightning. At Wilmore a tree in front of
Mrs. Homer's house was struck, and much
damage to crops w as done in the same lo
cality. In Adams township the storm was
unusually severe, twelve trees having been
shattered by lightning in the immediate
vicinity of Salix. At Scalp Level the roof
was torn off the barn ol Charles Foust and
the chimney ou the house of Mrs. Hu
cbaiian w as blow n dow n. This is the same
storm that raged so violently in Ulair

Hon. J. D. Hicks, in his talk to the far
mers at Wednesday evening's session of
the institute, gave as the reason for the
low price of w heat at the present time that
the cornering of that necessary commodity
by the wheat combines of Chicago, and
their endeavors to exai t of England an ex
orbitant price therefor, had caused that
country to turn to the Argenliue Confed
eration and Ilritish India, from which
countries she now imports aUiut tio.t i.i 0
bushels of w heat annually, thus decreas
ing to that extent the demand for th.
American product. The decrease in the
price of wool is due to the i,K-reased
amount of production in Australia and
other dependencies of Ureat I'.ritain. He
advised farmers to raise some other crop
tiesides w heat, but to stick to sheep-raising,
for he said the "clink of gold is heard
under the feet of the sheep."

For a year or more a feud has existed
among the neighbors residing in the vi
cinity of I'ensacola, about four miles south
west of Ebensburg, on the Wilmore road,
about a road.
At that point Jacob Holtz owns a farm
through w hich passes an old road tnrough
the woods the use of w hich is a great con
venience to some people in going to and
returning from Eliensburg as it materially
shortens the distance.
Jacob Holtz. the owner of the land oc
cupied by the road maintains that it is not
a public road and recently put a gale
across it and lias notified the people not to
tresspass on it.
On Saturday evening Joseph Krotender
fer was returning to his home and. being
late, took the short route. He was met by
Holtz, as he alleges, who knocked him off
the waicoii with a club and beat him until
he was un -onscious. Holtz afterwards,
w hen he realized how badly Krotenderfer
w as hurt, helped the mau home.
Dr. tJreen, of Sunimerhill, was sum
moned to attend the injured mau aud ou
examining his injuries pronounced the
case a critical one aud that there was
danger of Krotenderfer dying from his in
juries. Dr. Wagoner, of Johnstown, w as
also called upon as consulting physician.
On Wednesday a w arrant was issued for
Holtz, who was arrested and placed in jail.
Holtz alleges that Krotenderfer first struck
at him.
It is one of these instancesof neightiors
quarreling about nothing. The land oc
cupied by the road is worth but little, yet
it may cost Krotenderfer his lifeand Holtz
a term in prison.

The Farmers' Ini-tlf ale.
The second annual farmers' institute for
Cambria county was held at Ebensburg on
Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.
These institutes are being held all over
the state and attended w ith beneficial re
sults. Part of the expense is Inirn by the
Slate, the total appropriation for this work
being f.i.ri)o annually. This was appor
tioned last year among the different coun
ties of the state in the proportion of a min
imum of (75 to each county and an addi
tional allowance of two and one-half cents
for each farm in the county under the cen
sus of IS-.iO. Last season the rouniies of
Elk, Fores., McKean, Pike and Potter did
not ask for their quota, but several of these
counties now demand their share. This
v ill reduce the minimum apportionment
of last year to "." instead of 7.5. The al
lowance of two and one-half cents per
f irm will be retained. This apportionment
gave Cambria county fllu for institutes.
I'nder this mode ot distribution the largest

smallest by Cameron of 70.
