Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, I Department of Public Instruction. V II AKi:isi;t ii, pa.. December 23, ls3. ) Mrs. Laura J. Hysong, Gallilzin, Cam bria county. Pa. Dear Madam: I do not see anything in the lav to prevent nun? from teaching the children to call the priest "father," or a nun "sister." 1 am a Protestant clergyman, and yet I would consider it a breach of etiquette and com mon courtesy if I were to fail in using the proper ecclesiastical name in addressing a priest or a nuu. We Protestants recognize the early church fathers and I see no rea son why in common life we should not recognize the ecclesiastical names of the m jdern world. The law does not recog nize the names which an actress assumes ou entering the stage; yet it would be a great breach of etiquette and good sense if I should refuse to call her by the assumed stage name. I certainly should address a nun as "sister," using the word iu its ec clesiastical sense, although I would not accept a legal document from her unless signed in her name. The point which you raise is not a mat ter of religion at all, but' a matter of eti quette. The priests from heathen lands were addressed by their own titles at the Chicago '.'ongress of religions aud I believe that it argues the spirit of a by-gone age for anyone to raise objection lo leaching the common courtesies of life. Germany had a war of thirty years on religious questions a nil all parlies finally began to respect the religious peculiarities of their neighbors. If I were to go to a reception in the Vatican palace, I would, according to custom, kneel before the holy father, and would uot consider myself less true to my Protestant faith ou that account. Where wa are in the majority, Protestant directors may oldei the bible to be read iu the schools, and the Catholics must submit or establish schools of their own. Why should we object if they insist on the com mon courtesies of life w here they are in the majority ? It is certainly not wise to raUe a light ou the ground that is not tenable. I do not think that the school boaid has acted w isely, but the school law does uot vest any power in the stale siiieriiiteudeut or in the county superintendent by which we can reach the school board ou any of the grounds w bicb you have named.
