An act passed by the last h-gislat lire and
j approved June r.th, i.i.i, requires the reg
istry assessors of the several counties in
the state to make re'urn of all births and
deaths in their districts. Relow are the
provisions of the act:
'Section 1. That it shall be the duty of
the clerk of the Orphans' Court of each
county of the commonwealth to keep a
separate record of all births and of all
deaths oecuring within their respective
counties, hair! record shall he kept from
data and in suitable books, both to lie fur
nished as hereinafter provided, and shall
contain in separate columns as to births,
tint full name of the child, sex and color,
full names of father and mother, with their
residence and occupation of the father,
date and place of birth, with street and
number, when possible, and date of mak
ing record; anil as to deaths, the full name
of tin; deceased, color, sex and age. wheth
er married or single, place of birth, occu
pation, date and place of death, with street
and number when possible, cause of death,
duration of last illness, place and date of
interment. When a minor, the name of
the father and mother, and the date of
making the record.
"Section L It shall be the duty of the
assessors of the several townships, bor
oughs and wards within the common weal l h
to obtain semi-annually, at the time of
making their assessments now provided by
law, and it shall be the duty of parents,
guardians and other persons having
knowledge to furnish to such assessors the
information necessary to keep the record
specilied ill the precccding section. Said
assessors shall return said in ftiriuat ion to
the clerk of the Orphans' Court upon
blanks to be furnished as hereinafter pro
vided, at the time of making their semi
annual returns to the county commission
ers, and to each return shall be attached
tlur oath or affirmation of the assessor that
he made diligent inquiry as to the births,
deaths and other infi.i maliou referred to,
within his ward, borough or township,
and that his return is true to the best of
his know ledge, information and belief.
"Section X Kvery person who shall vio
late any of the provisions of this act shall
forfeit and pity the sum of ten dollars for
each ollit-nse, to tx- recovered in the name
of the .ommonweallh as debts of like
amount an; by law recovei able."

death, tin-clerk of the orphans court is
allowed tin; sum of live cents to be paid by
the county; for furnishing a cert i lied copy
of a birth or deitlh, :"il cents to be paid by
the pari y ordering the same; for making
search for each birth or death, where ct-r-tiiied
copy is not required, lo cents, to In
paid by party applying for the same. For
each birth or death returned the asses-or

closing up of his work in t hat city. six weeks

phoid fever, and notwithstanding every
thing that medical ait! and caieful nursing
could do. he gradually grew worse, ar.d for
several days past it was evident to those

hand, and on Wednesday ahout noon he
breathed Ids last. The deceased w as mar
ried to Mamie, daughter of J. A. Shoe
maker, of this place, who is thus early left
a w idow with an infant daughter to mourn
his early demise. Resides his wife and
chilil. his father and mother. Captain
Thomas Davis ami wife, two brothers
Schuyler and Stanton, and one sister
Mrs. Lester Larimer, all of this place, sur
vive him. His funeral will take place on
Friday morning. leaving his late residence
at 10:15. Interment in Lloyd's cemetery
after.services in the Congregational church

The death of Mrs. Scanlan was a very
unexpected one and her many friends were
shocked on hearing of it. She had given
birth to a child almut a week previous and
mother and child were getting along
well until a few days before her death,
when it was noticed that her condition
was such as to cause some alarm, but there
w as no anticipation of any serious results
and up until a few hours In-fore hi-r de
mise any belief that her death was so near
at band. Mrs. Scanlm's home before her
marriage about three years ago was in In
diana. Pa., w here her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Wm. Compels resitle. She leaves her
husband and halte. Id-sides her parents and
two sisters and a brother to mourn her
early death. Mrs. W. A. Scanlan. former
ly of this place, but now of Johnstow n, is
a sister of 1 1n- deceased. Her remains will
In- interred in the Catholic cemetery in this
placeon Friday in lining at half-past leu
o'clock. May she rest in peace.

readings kept the large audience in the

the last evening of the Instute's course of

The blacksmith shop of Ii. A. Hayes,
in I'atton caught !irt on Monday after
noon and the flames had made such pro
