The follow ing from the Ch-ar'iehl .lour
Jitil may be of use to some of our school
directors, as well as the average tax-payers,
who usually have to foot the bill:
Only a few years ago several school
boards in this county furnished the law
yers with some business by purchasing
school globes and then, after finding that
their teachers conid not use them success
fully sought to avoid the contract, and a
great deal of litigation was the result.
This year we bear of a man who has a
great geographical chart, a veiy taking
(V) thing for a school room, and with his
peculiarly persuasive powers boards of di
rectors have been induced to purchase to
the amount of four and five hundred dol
lars, and already loud protests are coming
from the people. Tin paper he gets
signed reads '-we severally" and 'individ
ually agree."' etc.. and thi next thing we
hear will be the school directors paying
for the charts "severally" and 'individu
ally." Hire-tors, before plunging their
districts into heavy obligations should i nn
fer w ith those directly interested and as
certain whether tln'V could be Utilized by
the teachers.
Law (ioTrrnlnic Wfm Knelnrw.
The law governing the moving of steam
engines on our public- roads, which will be
of interest to many, is as follows, vi:
"Every engine propelled by steam must
have a man at least .'too yards ahead of the
engine to warn persons riding or driving
upon any public road, of the fact that the
engine is coming, and also to as-ist in the
management of any horse or horses that
may require his assistance to control. It
also requires the engines to run as far
down as practicable to the sides of the
road to remain stationary until said horse
or horses have pa-srd to a safe distance,
in the meantime making a- little noise as
possible with .the steam." The penalty
for failing to comply with the law is a line
of ten dollars and costs. The law further
requires the man in charge of the engine
to have a printed copy posted on his en
gine under the fine of ten dollars.

N. B. It may be of interest to you to say we stri still deep in the grocery business. It will surprise
you to see the way we are selling goods in this department of our miiuimoth store. Some merchants
ssiy "I wonder where they can get goods to sell at fhose figures, as we can't buy them wholesale at the
prices they are retailing for." Here is the the secret: We know where the goods grow that is why
we sell so low. And when you come to town,
Look for the Red FlagThat is the Place.
