This act was so amended by the act or May is, l'.i.'i. as to make it mandatory upon school directors hereafter to provide at the ex pense of the district not only the text books, butal-oall other necessary school supplies. The amended act goes into immediate operation from the beginning of the cur rent s, !,,,; year, dating from the first Monday in June, ls'.ci. The design id the act is evidently to relieve parents and pu pil hereafter from the necessity of pur chasing text books and school supplies Tor use in our public schools. It is now-the imix-rati ve duty of the s-v( ral boards of directors and contrlh-rs to make provision for furnishing and equipping their schools with school I looks and with supplies gen erally needed by the pupils for tlaily use in the schools, such as slates, pencils, paper, pens. ink", tablets, etc. There may le instances in which the patrons of the schools will cause their children to use the Itooks in their Mssess ioii s long as these luniks are in good con dition ami ilo not differ from those adopted by the board. Tbe Blarklltk oal. In an article from the Cool Trifle Jour nal, in w hich Prof. Isaac Harvey's report ou the the property of the Blackltck Land and Improvement Compyny we take the follow ing: Tt may lie discovered that the upper Kittanning coal w ill at some points exceed tin- lower l'reeoort coal in thickness, hut its nudevclopfsj condition make me re frain from an estimate, although it may be one of the three most Important seams iu the Blacklick region, judging from its character iii this county and the second basin generally. Hence my conclusions ou this seam are reserved until it be further investigated. "Permit me to say in conclusion first. that three or four of the seyeu coal seams iu the section are in a mineable shape ami will yield cmuiercial coal. The A coal has lieen reasonably tested by drifts, burn ing and analysis and its utility well proved. Its identity seems to have been established, beyond perad venture, by ox-n- ing the hard fire clay iu the first liench di rectly lieiieath. While not yielding a mer chantable coal in many other basins and regions, its condition here gives assurance that it can In- easily mined and the coal obtain a ready sale. The B coal has a thickness and importance sutllcieiit to give it a place among the workable seams, as the 'Miller coal of the Coneinaugh. The C coal is valuable ou a tiorlion of this pro-rty at least, lt deserves careful in vestigation and trial, inasmuch as a few miles southward and in some other direc tions it is ofttimes the liest coal seam of the series. The I) coal shows a thickness ompaiing favorably with the mines on the same lied at Hastings along Walnut run and other points, even though some of the oH-nings supiMised to lie on this seam may lie proved to U- on the C coal. The Lemon' or Kcoal is good in this region and will prove to be a valuable factor iu the leasing and mining of the various seams on this property. "Second. These coal beds are all accessi ne aUive the wali-r of Blacklick. except ing a few hundred acres of the lower cnals. Im-Iovv the forks of the en-ek. The lands are -o situated as to U readily divided in to eight or ten ginttl mining Ii-um-s or oj-r alions. Most of the leases can lie located along the Blacklick railroad and creek and such others, as may not lie so located, can 1m- n-aclied hy a branch road or spur a mile or less in length. "Third. There is an abundance of sand stone Tor building purposes and cokeoveiis, ami the water facilities for all purposes are the lust. I n the nort hern part of the county some inconvenience has lieen ex perienced through scarcity of building stone for vai ions struct tires and coke ovens, and a lack of water for making coke and ot her purposes. "Fourth. The cstiinat' of C, Lot ). tons of coal may settn fabulous, tint while tin coal seams may not all maintain a maxi mum thickness, the amount has Im--u com puted with due allowance for outcrops faults, depressions in the seams of coal and variations in their relative thickness. The am omit of run! in the upper Kittanning lied, which may prove to be one of the most desirable seams, has not Im-cii included. It may be said aNo tliat it is just as proper and practical l. make an estimate of the amount of coal iu the various seams, as it is to describe tin- other aspects and quali ties of the coal measures. "Fifth. While inclined to lie cautious in the expression of my opinion, yet I am free to say that the Blacklick coal region with its present prospects and developments liears a favorable comparison with the Hastings. Spangler and Pattou coal terri tory, and with the best coal fields (d Jef ferson. Clearlield and Indiana counties. "With the same effort, perseverence and energy exerted in this region that have been employed in the northern part of the county, in hiMiming the tow ns, leasing min ing rights and selling the coal, the Black lick coal will soon have the same success and acquire as good a reputation in the eastern markets.''
