The proprietor jx-oely remarked that he would throw off half the bill. J. N. an swered that he would not be outdone in generosity by anyone, and that he would throw off the other half. Ivi Itatt. The "dog days" commenced on the loth instant. This season, which lasts six w-eks. or until August 2sth. i regard-d by many -ersons a more unhealthy than that which immediately precedes or succeeds It. and a being a time when mankind is more liable to attacks from disease through ex posure or imprudence in their general habits than any other. If there is no foundation iu fact for the ltelief it is a sup erstition of long standing. The rising and .setting of "Sirius"' or the dog star, w ith the sun, has Iw-en universally regarded as the cause of the excessive heat that pre vails generally at this particular season. The poor dogs, that arc made to bear the infamy of the source of our discomforts, are, perhaps, allied in some maimer to the extreme heat of the interval, but they, as w ell as human beings, share alike the alllictlons which are at this season com mon. Dogs at this season are sup(osed to be more susce piablc to hydrophobia than at any other time. 2.10 Rarrrlt f Water Fall. On Thursday moriking atxtut nine o'clock the two hundred and fifty barrel tank eticted on top of a derrick sixty-five feet high and w hich supplied Maple Park w ith water, fell with a rrash that could lte heard several squares away. The lank was full of water and a small building that was erected under the derrick, used for a sleeu ing room by a couple of colored men eiu yloyed at the hotel, was crushed like an egg shell. One of the men had Ix-cn in the building a few minutes Ix-fore the tank fell but luckily had gotten far enough away tocscaitc Iwing hurt.. On the loft of the small building were stored a lot of mattresses, glassware, liottles, etc., and the broken li in Iters of the derrick, tank and house and the biokcu glassware looked like a railroad wreck.
