fused the application for the transfer of a

Mr. Joseph Hipps ami W. C. Berry

before leaving town after Mulshing their
work on the county's accounts.
F. W. Fin W was brought to jail on
Wednesday, from Johnstown, charged
with forging the name of Nehemiah Grif
fith to two notes amounting to ."i which
he disposed of to Mr. Alex Cover.
There will be a festival held in the
new hall at Chest Springs for the benefit of
St. Monica's church, iu that place on Sat
urday, Monday and Tuesday evenings,
February 11th, nth and 14th to which all
are invited.
The dwelling house occupied by the
Agent of the 1'. K. 11.. at Cressou and the
freight house at the same place will be
removed a short distance westward in the
near future to make room for an addi
tional track.
Mordecai Kochcr, a desperate criminal
and est-penitentiary convict, escaped from
the jail at Huntingdon, on Tuesday morn
ing by sawing the cell and corridor locks
and defending to the first Moor through a
hole made by himself, lie is still at large.
Hon. L. D. Woodruff. editor and propri
etor of the Johnstow n lKnim-mt, has sold
his establishment to Warren Worth Bailey
of Chicago w ho took chai'geof the papel'ou

Michael Keshcoe a Hungarian, was ar
rested at Altoouaou Wedensday on a war
rent sworn out by his w ife, who lives at
tiallil.iu, charging the aforesaid Michael
with bigamy and desertion. He is said to
have another wife at Carlim. near Wil
lamsburg. Iu default of sti bail he was
sent to the lol!idayhurg jail.
Mrs. Rose Keller, of Canoe Valley,
Blair coiiuty, w hile in the act of liglitinga
hanging lamp Thursday evening, was
burued to death. The family were at sup
pi r, and when they entered the room the
old lady u ;is found lying on the Moor iu a
dying condition. It is sup;xscd she was
stricken with paralysis w hile in the actof
lighting the lamp.
The uew convent building on Atlam
street, is rapidly approc hiug completion.
When finished it w ill be occupied by the
Sisters of St. Joseph. Both the exterior
and interior is finished iu a first class man
ner, containing all the modern improve
ments and conveniences. Th e building
adds greatly to the Iteauly of the location

vrnt. It is the intention of the Pennsylvania
railroad Company to build a station house
at or near the Y at the terminus of the
Klicushurg .v. Cresson branch, at Cresson,
where all trains on the branch and
on the main line will stop. When the new
station house l built, the present one w ill
only tie used during summer lime for the
convenience of guests of the Mountain
House.
All aged maiden lady named Betsey
MeCurdy. living iu Hemplicld township,
Westmoreland county, died the other tlay.
Site was supposed to le very poor, aside
from the (tos-scssion of the house in which
she had lived for many years. The ex
ecutor made a thorough search of the
house, ami in the corner of the cellar he

It was a foolish piece of business on
the part of the County Commissioners to
give the printing of the ballots to the
Johnstown Tribune on Thursday of last
week. Had they waited until three
months after the election and given the

About 4 o'clock on Saturday momma:
the dead body of Mrs. Jane Raysou, w ife of
John Rayson, was found in the cow stable
on the premises. Mr. Raysou lives iu the

home from his w ork on Friday evening and
found his wife was absent. Search for
her was at once instituted, but it w as not

imity to the cows. It s thought her death
was caused by heart disease. The de
ceased, who was thirty-live years of ige,
beside her husband, leaves three children'.
The death in mysterious and the cause
ill be investigated.
Samuel S. Edwards, of Monellville,
was struck by the third section of West
em Kxoress at Rhodes crossing, uear
Johnstown, a twin t li o'clock on Tuesday
morning and instantly killed. The young
man was walking on the track on his way
home when the accident occured. He and
Mis Amanda IIotTnian of the same place
had applied for a marriage license the day
previous and the wedding ceremony was
to have taken place on Tuesday evening.
Miss Hoffman was engaged in fixing her
wedding dress when told of the accident.
Notwithstanding the fact that the edi
tor of the Republican UuhUiuj flunked last
week on our oiler to take teu thousand
blank ballots at the price he alleged they
could lie printed for and concluded to
"wash his hands of the matter" he has
lieeu struck by another idea and is thresh
ing the old straw ovr again this week.

ballots for the city election in Johnstown
for. The problem can be worked out by
the old "Ruleof Three."

SA N K ER. Died at Thomasville,
Georgia? on Sunday, January Is'Xl, of
consumption, Mr. Andrew J. Sanker, aged
:$." years H months and 14 days.
The subiect of this sketch was lxrn on
the sth of May ls..7 near Loretto, where lit;
always resided with his parents. Hi; was
a school teacher. His deep interest in his
chosen profession, soon made him one of
Cambria's foremost teachers. At this
work he continued until a year ago, when
consumption, caused by a severe cold and
overwork, had so weakened his strength
that lie liuished his school with ti i Hie u I ty.
Last Noycmlier, hoping to improve his
health, he startetl on a trip through the
southern states. He visited successively
SilverCitv, New Mexico. El I'aso. Texas,
aud Thomasville. Georgia. When the
latter place was reached, lie was unable to
go further. His brother Luke of Wash
iugtoi.. joined him ami remained w ith him
until his death. His remains reached
home on Wednesday eveuing. After a
high mass, cc'cbratcd by Rev. Father
Kittell. all that w as mortal of our friend
was laid to rest iu the Catholic cetnetry
near St. Michael's church.
During Mr. Sankers's .lifetime he formed
the acquaintance of many people. That
he retained them as friends'is verified by
the large Milliliter present ut his funeral.
He w as a most exemplary young man, and
his loss w ill be deeply felt in this commun
ity. On Thursday of last week the County
Commissioners opened the bids for the
printing of the tickets for the city of
Johnstown at the coming municipal elec
tion. There were four bids filed, all from
Johnstown, ex-ept the iinhlinij,' of this
place, ami its editor w ho hail lieeu doing
some figuring on ballots for the past four
months was determined to s how the Johns
town printing otlices w hat an establish
ment witli power enough to run all the
pi inting offices in Elienshurg and an im
mense paper cutter, the largest in the
county, could do. The bids are as follows:

Shortly after 1 o'clock on Monday morn
ing, the large four-story brick building
known as Woodcock's arcade -in A I loon a
was discovered to lie on fire, anil at five
o'clock, when the firemen eaiued control,
damage to the amount of f'.il.om had been
dime. The tire is said to lie of incendiary
origin; the insurance will cover about one
third the loss.
The World s Museum Company, Limited,
occupied the third story, and while the
animals and curios were removed w ithout
damage, the loss w ill be heavy, as trunks,
wardrolies, etc.. Were reduced to ashes.
The second Moor was used as office and
the residences of six families, and all these
had their goods much damaged by water.
On the first floor were tlie dry goods store
of Fred I lesser, and the w all paer and
picture frame stoie of J. Kramer, and the
wholesale dry goods and notiou store of
Lew iue A Stutzer. These stocks aggrega
ted a value of $7."1.(I0, and they were badly
damaged by water. The building was
erected in ls7 at a cost of f Ui,iiui, and the
insurance carried w as llo.ijui.

the weather oiens, by Mr. Charles Mc
radden of Philadelphia, the geiitleman
w ho built the railroads on the Chest creek
and Susquehanna. The work will be
commenced from Etiensburg, west leaving
